Ever wondered how sites become World Heritage sites? These sites are of immense cultural and natural importance and earning the prestigious title is no easy task. In this blog post, we'll explore the five steps involved in the nomination process.

How to be nominated as a World Heritage Site

There are five steps for nominating the World Heritage site. The first of which is for a country or state party to take an inventory of its significant cultural and natural sites. Then the site is included in a tentative list after an inventory in the country or the state. After it, the name of the site is included in the nomination file from the tentative list.

The review of the file is taken by the advisory bodies. Once the review is taken, the World Heritage Committee gives the decision. And then the name of the site is inscribed on the World Heritage list after meeting the criteria. Thus, it goes through rigorous procedure.

Step 1: Inventory
First, a country or state party must create an inventory of its significant cultural and natural sites. This involves identifying and documenting sites that hold exceptional value to humanity. This inventory serves as the foundation for the nomination process.

Step 2: Tentative List
Once the inventory is complete, the site is included in a tentative list. This list consists of sites with the potential to become World Heritage sites. Being included in the tentative list is a significant milestone, recognizing the outstanding universal value of the site.

Step 3: Nomination File
The site's name is then included in the nomination file after being listed as tentative. This detailed document provides a comprehensive description of the site's cultural and natural significance. The nomination file is a critical component that is carefully reviewed by experts.

Step 4: Review by Advisory Bodies
The nomination file undergoes a thorough review by advisory bodies, such as the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). These bodies assess the site's eligibility based on criteria set by the World Heritage Convention. Their evaluation plays a significant role in determining if the site will be inscribed on the World Heritage list.

Step 5: Decision by the World Heritage Committee
The final decision is made by the World Heritage Committee, which is composed of representatives from various countries. The committee considers the recommendations of the advisory bodies and determines if the site meets the criteria for inscription. This decision is the culmination of extensive evaluation and discussion.

If a site is deemed to possess exceptional value and meets the necessary criteria, it is inscribed on the World Heritage list. This prestigious title brings global recognition and positions the site among the most significant cultural and natural wonders in the world.

The nomination process for a World Heritage site is meticulous and thorough, involving extensive research, evaluation by experts, and careful consideration by the World Heritage Committee. Being nominated as a World Heritage site is a testament to the outstanding universal value that a site possesses, making it a treasure for humanity to cherish and protect for generations to come.
