Model Letters with Solution

Informal letters are written to people who are close to us or knows very well to us. They include letters to parents, brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts, grandparents, friends and acquaintances.

Such letters are termed informal because the style and format to be followed are casual. You write to such people as if you were conversing with them.

Formal letters are addressed to officials, authorities, would-be employers, newspaper editors and the like.

Such letters require specific wording and a very definite format. Informal as well as Formal. This means that all parts of the letter - Addresses, Subjects, References, Paragraphs, Salutations, Subscriptions begin from the left hand side of the margin.

[A Common situation or some common information will be given to you, upon which separate questions, one of the informal type and one of the formal type, will be based. ]

    Dear Alok,

In advance, I wish you a happy Holi. I also say this : Don't let Holi lose all its colors. you may wonder Why I am saying this. Well, in today's 'Delhi Daily', there was an advertisement put in by the Delhi police with the same slogan. The advertisement advised people to avoid doing certain things in order to make 'Holi safe'. I thought that their observations and suggestions were very valid and so I thought I would share the message with you.

During Holi, one thing we should definitely avoid is throwing water or rubber balloons containing water at passers-by. Children enjoy doing this. but little do they release how much harm they cause to themselves and to others. we should also refrain from forcing people who are unwilling to play Holi to join in the revelries. Also in many places instead of colors, people use dirt and even chemicals instead of natural Colors. This is so disgusting and should be shunned completely.

You Know that in certain localities, the youth get drunk and indulge in indecent language or riotous Behavior. They even use Holi as an excuse for eve-teasing and drunken- driving. They ride three-on-a-bike, without helmets and pose a danger not only to themselves, but also to others. The police have urged people not to indulge in or tolerate such behavior.

This is the first time that the police have put in such an advertisement and I commend them for it. I do hope that you and your friends will avoid such things in your locality and really make this an enjoyable and ' Color full ' Holi.

Convey my regards to all at home.

Subject : Your ad in 'The Delhi Times' about 'Safe Holi'

    Sir / Madam,
I, along with many other people in our locality, were pleasantly surprised to read the advertisement about playing 'Safe Holi' that you have placed in ' The Delhi Times'.

Indeed, the ad was most timely and very necessary. your advertisement has warned against all those activities that make playing Holi, not only in our vicinity, but in other areas of Delhi highly dangerous. The ad has created an awareness of how this gracious and colorfull festival can be celebrated with dignity and decorum.

Parents do not bother to stop their children from throwing balloons on unsuspecting passers-by. On the contrary, they themselves buy balloons for the children. In certain localities, people who happen to visit the place are forced to join in the indecent revelries. Very often vulgar language and riotous behavior is in evidence.

Drunken driving, triple-driving on two-wheelers and riding without helmets is the norm of the day-especially among the youth. This leads to fatal accidents, not only to the drivers, but also to innocent bystanders or roadside travelers. Worse still, young rowdy boys think that it is their right to indulge in eve-teasing on this day. In certain sections of the city, incidents of chain-snatching also occur.

Holi is a Festival of colors, not of 'good aims' and 'harassment' ! In certain sections of our city, dirt and chemicals are used instead of natural colors. Is this how Holi is to be celebrated? Is this what our culture teaches us ?

We are grateful that you have warned the citizens against such indecent acts. We also hope that the police will be out on the streets to monitor the situations and take stringent actions against those who overindulge in activities that are harmful to peace-loving members of society. Thanking you once again on behalf of the citizens of Connaught Place,

     Yours Faithfully,

    Dear Ravi,
I was the eyewitness to an incredible act of bravery in our village. You may have read about it in the newspaper, but I must narrate to you what I saw in my own words!

Reena is the four-year-old daughter of our local grocer. On 29th August 2019, at about 9 a.m., She accidentally fell into a well near her house. There were screams and confusion all around. I ran to the place. Unfortunately, I do not know how to swim. I felt helpless and desperate. The entire village had gathered there, but no one dared to dive in to save the girl. The girl's head was bobbing in and out of the water. precious minutes were Slipping away.

Then twelve-year-old Rohan happened to pass by. He is the Son of Shivram , the local grocer. He pushed his way through the crowd and without heeding warnings or caring for personal safety jumped into the well. He caught little Reena by her shoulders and kept her head above water until a rope was thrown in. Then with the girl on his back, he came out of the well.

The entire village of Thangewadi feels that Rohan deserves a special Award for Bravery, if possible, at the hands of the Chief Minister of our State. We have written a letter to the local MLA, signed by all those present at the scene. We hope that Rohan is rewarded for his grand act of courage.

will let you Know if there are further developments.

Subject : Recommendation for Bravery Award ( For Rohan G)

    Dear Sir,
This is to bring to your attention the fact that Rohan G , a resident of this town has recently performed a feat exceptional for its bravery and selflessness. The incident was recently featured in the local newspaper. I am enclosing a news clipping with this letter.

On 29th August 2019, at about 9 a.m., Reena ,the four-year-old daughter of our local grocer, accidentally fell into a well near her house. There were screams all around and a lot of confusion. No one dared to do anything to save the girl. Precious minutes were slipping away.

Then twelve-year-old Rohan G happened to pass by. He is the son of Shivram, the local grocer. He rushed through the crowd and without heeding warnings or caring for personal safety jumped into the well. He caught the girl by her shoulders and kept her head above water until a rope was thrown in. Then with the girl on his back, he came out of the well.

The entire village was witness to this act of bravery and we feel that Rohan deserves a special Award for Bravery, if possible, at the hands of the Chief Minister of our State. Many of us, Whose signatures I have enclosed, were eye-witnesses to this selfless act of daring. Kindly Consider our fervent request.

    Dear Nikita,

No news from you for a long time. Let me tell you about 'Cleanliness Week ' at our village. Because of unhygienic conditions of our Wadgaon village, Gram Panchayat Samiti of Wadgaon village, announced ' Cleanliness Week ' and made it a great success.15th Sept. 2019 to 22nd Sept. 2019 was the period of the cleanliness campaign.

Entire village celebrated the ' Cleanliness Week '. Our school also participated. All our Students worked wholeheartedly. We cleaned the village with great enthusiasm. Before that, Our village was littered with garbage, dust and dirt. Germs and bacteria flourished and villagers were suffering from skin diseases and infectious diseases. But now, it is clean and healthy atmosphere everywhere. The villagers now understood that cleanliness implies personal hygiene as well as the cleanliness of the environment. we explained to them that they should always use the dustbins provided by the panchayat and throw the garbage only in the dumping grounds reserved for the purpose.

Villagers were advised to always use their toilets everyday and not to litter the roads and places with dirt. They were warned not to spit on the roads and walls. The Panchayat Promised to punish those who make public places dirty. On the last day of the ' Cleanliness Week ' the villagers pledged to plant more trees to keep the surroundings pleasant, clean and fresh. The campaign was a great success. The villagers of wadgaon, now understood that cleanliness is certainly next to godliness.
I hope, you too, understand this. with love.

Most of our street lights are fused. The nights are dark and the roads scary. Innumerable cracks in the road have made travelling by two-wheeler or four-wheeler quite dangerous.
Minor or major accidents are the order of the day. Water supply is scarce because of leakage in the water pipes. Even the drainages are blocked.

    Dear Sir / Madam,

We, the residents of M.J.K. Park, are living in the worst of civic conditions. On behalf of the residents, I wise to draw your attention to the problems we are facing.

Most of the street lights in our locality are fused. The area is in darkness and there have been many robberies recently. There are leakages in the water pipes at many places, so our water supply has been affected. The roads are full of potholes and so during the rains they have become dangerous to travel on. Most of the drainage are blocked, so there is overflowing of waste water. This could give rise to diseases. Finally, there are not enough garbage cans for the collection of garbage.

We have made repeated complaints to the officials concerned and workers, but no one has responded positively so far. We request you to take urgent action, otherwise we will have to Organize  a morcha or some other such action.

    Thanking you,

    Dear Tom,

Thank you for your letter. It was so nice of you to share your thoughts with me about the problems that children face in England. As promised, I will tell you briefly about some of the problems faced by India and What Indian children can do for the betterment of India's future.

Our biggest problem is poverty. But this is linked with illiteracy. What we can do is to persuade the poor in our locality to send their children to school and eradicate illiteracy. we have many municipal schools in our towns and cities where education is completely free. Our next big problem is overpopulation. We, as children, can only tell people about the benefits of a small family. Another problem that we face is pollution. This is because of ignorance on the part of people regarding the importance of keeping the environment clean. There is plenty of illegal deforestation going on in many parts of our state and country. we have to make people aware of the dangers posed by all types of pollution and to teach them the importance of trees and the soil. Another thing we need to teach people is for personal and public hygiene.

There is a lot of work to be done, and as children we can only our best. I know that I would like to see my country as one of the greatest nations on the earth.
    Do write to me soon.

    Your loving penpal,

Subject : problems faced by India and what children can do about them.

    Sir,

If India has to overcome the problems it faces, the children of the nation have to step forward in full force and make efforts to overcome them.

The problem of poverty is linked with literacy. Children have to persuade their neighbors to send their children to school. They should be aware of instances of child labor in their localities and report these to the authorities. Children should insist on cleanliness in their neighborhood to keep it pollution free. They should organize and conduct cleanliness drives in order to purify the environment. As regards population, there is not much children can do except to highlight the benefits of a small family. In order to slow down the process of deforestation children must teach their neighbors the importance of trees and the soil. This is especially necessary in rural areas.

If children become proactive regarding these issues, India will indeed become one of the greatest nations on earth.

    Yours truly,

    Dear Chachi,
It came as a shock to all of us when we learnt that you were admitted to hospital for two weeks on account of sunstroke. Temperatures have gone up to an all-time high this year, I agree, but it could have been caused only by sheer neglect! Chachi, tending the fruit trees is not more important than your health!!!

We came to Know about your condition this morning from Gori Aunty Who has come down to stay with her relatives for a few days. She says that Chachaji, Chinku and Mona are there to take care of you. It must be quite a strain for them too.

The students of Class IV greeted their teacher, Mrs Desai, before they sat down. It was time for their English Lesson.' Shall we bring out our 'Balbharati' textbook, teacher ?" asked Shruti.

"Not now," said the teacher. "We are going to learn letter-writing today. Some special types pf letters ! Come here, Javed and Nisha. Please distribute these notebooks."

"And while they give out the books," continued Mrs Desai, "let me give you some good news."

The students were all ears, now. Their teacher announced with a smile, "New arrivals in the library and plenty of them ! Story books of every kind, informative books with lovely pictures, books of puzzles, jokes ! All have been displayed in the library so you will know which ones to ask for the next time you are in the library."

'oooh!' 'Lovely!' 'I can hardly wait !' were some of the eager responses to this piece of news. All were excited except one.

"What's the use ?" complained Felix. "We have only one library period in a week, and hardly for half an hour too. Just when the story gets interesting, we have to leave the book and go back to class......"

Now, Varsha joined in to say, "For two weeks, I've been waiting to know what happened to the pied piper of Hamelin. There was a holiday, last Thursday, and we missed the library period."

Mrs Desai realized that what her students said was perfectly true. She decided to request the Principal to allow a home issue facility for Class IV. After all, they were big enough to look after the books they took home.

'Hey, wait !' thought Mrs Desai. 'There's a better way to do it. Why not let the students themselves write a letter of request to the Principal ?' After all, that was what she had planned to teach that day - how to write polite, formal letters.

'What an opportunity ! A good subject for a formal letter. And of course, a real situation would make the learning more effective and interesting.'

When Mrs Desai suggested this to her class, they were very excited.

Without losing much time, Mrs Desai began to teach her class how to write a formal letter.

"The Sender's address and the date should be written in the upper right corner of the page," She taught.

"The next step is to write the name or post of the receiver near the left margin. Then write his or her address below that."

"And after that, you must write the subject of the letter in short, below the receiver's address, "she further instructed.

"That's something new," remarked Sharon. "We do not mention a subject in our friendly letters, do we?"

"Of course not," said Mrs Desai.

"What do we do next, teacher ?" Shruti Wanted to know.

"You address the receiver, writing 'Dear Sir' or 'Dear Madam'. Remember, the rest of the letter also should be written in polite language. Write to the point," Mrs Desai explained.

"And should we end it with, 'Yours lovingly' ?" asked Renu.

"Oh, no !" said teacher, "You can write that to your friends, or parents or even to me. But when you are writing as a student to the Principal, you may write, 'Yours faithfully,' or 'sincerely'. Do not forget to thank the receiver appropriately before you close the letter. Come on, now, let's draft this letter together."

After quite a few errors, cancellations and changes, here's the letter Class IV wrote to their Principal. It was written very neatly.....

    Dear Madam,

We, the students of class IV, have a request. Our English teacher, Mrs. Desai, has informed us about many new books that have arrived in our school library. We are eager to read them.

However, it is not possible for us to finish reading a book during the Library period, which is only once a week.

May we have your kind permission, Madam, to take the books for home-reading ? We promise that we shall take utmost care of the books and return them on time.

Mrs. Desai met the principal soon after class. She told her about the excitement that followed the announcement of new books in the library.

"They just cannot wait to read all those lovely books," she beamed. The Principal was also delighted and praised her. "The credit goes to you, Mrs. Desai. You have created and aroused their interest in reading books. It is going to help them a great deal in future."

"Yes, Madam," said Mrs. Desai, "but they find the weekly Library period too short a time to read. So, my students are going to appeal to you to allow home issue of books. They have written to you, a letter of request."

"A letter ? Why?" asked the Principal in surprise.

"I had to teach the class how to write polite formal letters, and I took this opportunity to make them actually write a formal letter, " explained Mrs. Desai.

"Excellent, Mrs. Desai," exclaimed the Principal. "And I shall not dampen their interest in reading. I shall certainly allow them to take books home for reading."

The next morning the Principal found the letter on her desk. She signed the letter with the remark 'Permission Granted' and sent it to the Librarian. To encourage the children of Class IV further, the Principal instructed the Librarian to give a written reply to the students and here's what he wrote:

    Dear children,

I am delighted to know that you are so keen on reading the new books in our school library.

The Principal has been kind enough to grant to your class permission for home issue facility. I shall keep the library open for an hour after school, on all week days, You can come and collect any one book of your choice and return it, the following week. But I must urge you to read and observe the library rules displayed in the library.

Do come and enjoy reading the books.

"Hey ! Great news !" cried the monitor. "Look, We have received a letter from the Librarian. And, guess what ? We can take story books home to read."

"Wow !" exclaimed Shruti with bright round eyes.

"Goodbye, boredom ! Welcome happy hours !" shouted Akshay.

The letter from the Librarian was put up on the class notice board for all to read.

When Mrs. Desai walked into the classroom, the students of Class IV burst out into many exclamations of thanks.

"Shall we write a letter of thanks to the Librarian?" Suggested Manuja.

"That's an excellent idea !" said Mrs Desai, smiling to herself at this new interest in formal letter writing.

    Sir,

21 citizens of this town have already succumbed to the ravages of the summer heat, and the number is on the increase. Yet we see no concrete steps being taken to prevent these tragic incidents. It is quite clear that the local hospitals are unable to cope with the rising number of casualties.

The Civic Health Bodies need to wake up at least now to prevent the recurrence of further casualties.

Here are some suggestions that need to be implemented at the earliest :

The Civic authorities should distribute leaflets / flyers, put up notices and make city announcements stating the following :
    • Municipal hospitals should be put on high alert.
    • Residents should visit a doctor without delay if they face symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, cramps, fast breathing, intense thirst etc.
    • Residents should stay indoors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
    • Residents should not indulge in excess physical activity or extreme exercise.
    • Drinking water has been provided all over the town at key pointer, especially near markets, places of worship, bus depots, the railway station, etc.
The use of alcohol is discouraged.

I do hope you will take cognizance and implement these and other initiatives as soon as possible.

    Dear Hiren,
Imagine our horror when we returned from a week's holiday in Sikkim to find that our home had been robbed !

of course, daddy has made the necessary police complaint and the inquiry is on, but all of us are quite shaken.

It seems there is quite an organized gang at work. Our home is not the only casualty. We know of at least three other homes where such a thing has happened.

The thieves probably came at dead of night, because none of the neighbors noticed anything or were disturbed by any noises. They took away our TV set, some small pieces of jewelry and about ₹ 10,000 / - in cash.

Mummy says it is unlikely that we shall recover the losses.

Some young men from our locality have organized night watches.

    Sir,
My house was broken into while we were away and many articles of value stolen. This is obviously part f a series of thefts which have plagued our town for the last month and a half.

I have filed an FIR and your officials have assured me that an inquiry is in progress and that the thieves will be nabbed.

However, there are certain measures that can be adopted by the police  force, which you may or may not have begun implementing.

Here are some suggestions which I hope will prove useful :
    1. There should be regular police patrolling, especially at nights. This is very necessary.
    2. The police can, with the help of willing and noteworthy citizens, form a 'Watchdog' committee and have regular sessions for training and updates.
    3. The police need to bring in police dogs to sniff out certain areas or residences that are suspect.
I am sure you have other more sophisticated methods too.

I do hope that the culprits are soon brought to book as these incidents have left the citizens with a strong feeling of insecurity. People have also begun murmuring about the inefficiency of the police and a few whispers are even going around that some elements in the police force may be hand in glove with the criminals.

    Dear Pravin,
Yesterday we had  a camp on our school grounds on the occasion of 'World Water Day'. One of our aims was to disseminate information about water conservation. I would like to share some interesting facts and pieces of advice that came up during the camp.

Very few know that only 1% of the water in earth is available to mankind for use. Yet we waste it thoughtlessly and if, I may say so at great risk to ourselves.

There are so many things we can do to conserve water, Unfortunately either we don't know or simply don't care.

Here are some of the ways :
    1. Fix leaking plugs in kitchens and toilets.
    2. Water the backyard or gardens and parks in the morning or in the evening. If you do so in the afternoon, most of the water evaporates and is wasted.
    3. Do not water plants too much. A little water goes a long way.
    4. Reuse tap water by keeping a container in the basin. Use the same  water for plants.
    5. Turn off the tap while brushing the teeth or washing dishes.
    6. Wash your bike or car with a bucket of water rather than a hose.
These are just some o the ways by which we can conserve precious water. Remember, a drop of water is more than a sack of gold to a thirsty man. Pravin, it would be very nice if you could prepare a chart and put it up in your class showing the information I have shared with you. Also, if possible, you can send me some valuable tips for conserving water. I could share the information with my groups and friends.

Do write soon and give me your views.

Subject : Urgent need for water conservation measures in Dhule

    Dear Sir,

I wonder if you are aware that yesterday was 'World Water Day'.

On such an occasion, we, the citizens of Dhule, expected some kind of information disseminated or awareness created about water conservation. This was especially needed since Dhule has been experiencing trying times due to scarcity of water.

Even so, there is urgent need for water conservation since we have had poor rains this season. People grumble about water scarcity and stand in queues at wells and public taps. We see tankers wending their way through the town every day. Yet people are not aware of what they themselves can do in order to conserve water and make things easier not only for themselves but for the entire town at large.

Here are some steps that could help alleviate the situation.
    1. You could arrange for random checks in homes and public places to pinpoint leaking plugs in kitchens and toilets and public water taps.
    2. You could issue instructions to those who have gardens to water their backyards or gardens only in the morning or in the evening as  doing this in the afternoon results in waste due to evaporation. The same instructions could be given to your officials in charge of watering parks and public gardens. They could be instructed to reduce watering of plants.
    3. Reusing tap water by keeping a container in the basin is an excellent way for water conservation. Keeping taps running while brushing the teeth or washing dishes is another way of wasting water. Even those who have vehicles could be instructed to use water buckets for washing instead of hoses. All these instructions could be given over telecasts and broadcasts.
I sincerely hope that you will consider these aspects for otherwise, the situation might turn out to be worse than drought.

    Dear Daddy,

I feel ashamed to tell you that my performance at the Preliminary Examination has been pretty unsatisfactory. I have failed in English and Mathematics and barely scraped through in Science, Hindi and Marathi. Only in Social Studies have I managed to secure 75%.

I know this will depress you a lot. The reason why I have fared so poorly is my overconfidence. I assumed I knew all the subjects quite well. Even while attempting the paper. I was rather casual. It was only when the teachers returned my papers after correction that I realized how careless I had been. I am quality of having committed silly spelling errors and making hasty calculations.

All this has come as a tremendous shock to me, and although the final Board examination is barely a month away, I am determined that I shall hold my own. I know you will be very upset, but do forgive, me. I assure you that I shall come out with flying colors.

    Dear Sir,

I am really sorry that I have not done well in the recent Preliminary Examination. Having failed in two subjects, I have barely scraped through in the others, except, perhaps, in Social Studies.

This must be a great disappointment to you as I know you considered me one of your keenest students.

Sir, the reason I fared badly was due to over - confidence, I took it for granted that I could manage all the subjects with the least amount of study, and thus did not spend as much time on revision as I should have.

These results have come as an eye - opener for me . I now know that it is only continuous revision that will enable me to secure the marks that I know I can get. Even during the  examinations, I attempted the papers casually, committed silly spelling errors and made hasty calculations.

I, personally, am shocked at my results, and although the final Board examination is barely a month away, I am determined that there shall, be no repeat performance. I have already begun burning the midnight oil and have planned a systematic revision schedule.

Sir, I have noticed that at key junction areas, very often there are no traffic police. Also many of the traffic signals at crucial busy spots are not in operation. As a result, there is complete disorder in the flow of traffic. Vehicles cross - cross each other and very often cause traffic jams.

Two-wheeler riders slip through lines, take the wrong lane and catch riders going the right way by surprise. This has led to one or two serious accidents, which have have been reported in recent new articles.

Sir, I request you to take cognizance of these matters and to remedy the situation at your earliest. This is in the interest of the safety of the citizens of Solapur.

    Yours truly,

    Dear Daddy,

Our class is planning a trip to Nagzira Sanctuary in the first week of October. It will be  a two day visit. Our class teacher is making arrangements for our stay with a local school there. Already about 30 students from our class have registered for the trip.

The expenses incurred for the trip will amount to Rs. 1500/ - Per student.

Please let me know if I too can go for the trip. I would really like to since I am very interested in nature and wildlife.

Our teacher said you could transfer the amount to the school account by NEFT.

I hope all is well at home.

Give my love and regards to mummy and little Alan.

    Dear Ravi,

We read about your dear mother's sad and untimely demise in the 'TIMES'. It came as a great shock to all of us. We cannot believe that she is no no more with us. Please accept our deepest condolences.

We know that she had not been keeping good health lately. However, we were so sure that she would recover. This is a great personal loss to me. She was such a sweet dear lady, always so hospitable, and I knew she loved me very much. For you it must  be really terrible. I only wish I  could have been there with you during this time of extreme distress.

I pray the Almighty gives you the fortitude to bear this loss.

How are all of you coping ? The house must feel terribly empty. Ravi, you are the eldest sibling. It is up to your now to give courage to your little sister.

May the soul of your mother rest in peace. I will be coming to meet you as soon as my examinations are over. Until then be strong.

     Hi  !

Hope this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits.

This coming Sunday, there is a grand opening of a park with a difference. It is be  called 'Nama Nami Park' and is meant only for senior citizens. What a wonderful way to acknowledge the elderly in our society!

I immediately thought of both of you. Gratitude brimmed in my eyes. I was back in nostalgia land. The very first stories of moral inspiration that both of you used to tell me at bedtime flashed through my mind. I learnt my first values of life and my early lessons in spirituality from you. You were my first teachers. All through my life the two  of you have been my guiding force, my 'touch bearers'.

I think of both of you with the greatest affection. When next you come here, my friends and I shall take you to the park and sing songs of love, respect and devotion.

The two of you are my evergreen stars, I pray to God to grant both of you health and happiness.

    Dear Mummy,

I wanted so much to attend Neetu Didi's wedding, but I'm afraid I won't be able to. Our Preliminary Examinations will begin the day after tomorrow. They will end on the 2nd of February, but after that we have to follow a strict regimen of studies. The school has arranged lectures by some expert educationists. They will guide us as to how to answer the Board's Activity Sheets. We shall also be preparing for the practical. Jhule wala Sir has promised to coach me and five of my classmates in Mathematics.

I can't afford to miss a single day.

Convey my deep regrets to Neetu Didi. I know she will be terribly disappointed. I shall write to her as well as send her a greeting card.

It would be great if you give a separate wedding present to her on my behalf. Maybe that will make her feel better. Do explain to her, and tell her that I shall visit her at her new home immediately after my examinations.

Love to Chunnu. Is Tommy up to his tricks still? Lots of love to Daddy.

    Dear Rohan,

The reason why I haven't written to you for so long is that I was busy preparing for our school Sports Day which was held on the 23rd of this month. Our team came up to the finals of the 4 Ñ… 400 m relay and we were busy practicing.

The great day dawand and I was quite nervous. So were my teammates. I, being the captain, had to hide my fears and allay theirs. Only the finals of the various events were held on this day. The meet began at 8 a.m. sharp with the march past and salute to the  school flag, The individual events were very exciting and many of my friends won. When our turn came I sent up a silent prayer, flexed my muscles and got ready to go.

I was the runner for the final lap. Our second lap runner, Yusuf, dropped the baton and lost a few precious seconds. But I put my everything into  the final lap of the race and, believe it or not, we won!

What a day ! The Prize Distribution in the evening was like music to my ears. I will give you more details later.

Season's greetings to all at home.

    Your loving friend.

    My dear Amit,

I am really shocked that you have failed in the terminal examination. But what shocks me even more is your idea of giving up studies altogether. Can this be the same Amit I once knew? The very same Amit whom all of us admired for being a stereo and a winner? You were our motivation, our inspiration, what has happened to you?

Obviously you are indulging in unnecessary self - pity, and are refusing to meet the failure squarely  in the face. Every failure has some causes. Have you asked yourself why you have failed? It appears to me that your careless approach towards study has landed you in this terrible mess. I only hope, you haven't got into bad company and acquired some bad habits.

It is my earnest advice that you take stock of the situation, shake off any bad habits that you may have acquired and get back to your old way of thinking and working. You are a clever, boy, Amit. Treat this failure as a stepping stone to success. If you have the will, you can win,  Remember, without proper education you will come to nothing in this highly competitive world. Get rid of your self - pity and look forward to the future. We are all with you. If I can help in my way, please let me know.

    My dear Raj

It was so nice to read about your trip from Surat to Mumbai by train. However, I too have something to tell you. This morning I had a terrible experience in an overcrowded bus.

It is because of this bus journey that I am now lying in bed with a sprained ankle. In fact this letter comes to you from the sick - bed. Here is what happened.

I woke up late this morning. After a hurried wash and breakfast, I ran down to the bus stop to get to school on time, There was quite a crowd, The bus arrived and I pushed my way towards the door of the bus along with the jostling crowed. I managed to step on the footboard while with my free hand, I caught the side rod. Some people behind me failed to catch the running bus. One or two fell off the bus. I saw a kid putting his hand out of the running bus. People brought this to the notice of its parents. In this 'half -in-half-out'  the dangling manner I reached the next stop somehow. I was pushed right out of the bus due to pressure from the crowd inside and as a result. I badly twisted my ankle. I limped to a waiting autorickshaw and came back straight home Our family doctor said I had sprained my ankle. So it's going to be at least one week in bed for me ! You can safely expect another letter from in two day's time - I'm so bored !

    Dear Nachiket,

Received your letter yesterday I fully understand your situation. Deciding on a career is a pretty difficult task. But remember, the most important thing is to know what your capabilities are and then decide what you want.

As far as I can see, you prefer the arts, and you are a good speaker. This makes you capable of teaching or being a lawyer.

I think your natural ability to argue your way out of any situation will stand you in good stead in a courtroom. You are also an avid reader of crime fiction. So, law is not a totally unfamiliar subject for you. In fact, I am surprised the idea hasn't already occurred  to your Maybe you are wary of the difficulties involved in becoming a lawyer.

I wouldn't let that worry me if I were you. What is important is determination. If  you like imparting knowledge, why then, teaching is the line for you !

I'll think of other options also and then I will write again.

Till then keep surfing the professional websites, and some good ideas will turn up.

    Do write soon.

    Dear Harry,

I received your letter last week, but we were very busy with Shivaji Jayanti celebrations, and so I could not reply immediately. Shivaji Maharaj was a famous and popular king of India. Even today he is worshipped all over the country . Hance his jayanti (birth anniversary) is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The chowk (roundabout) in our town was turned inti a fort that resembled Shivaji Maharaj's fort at Raigad. A life - size portrait of Shivaji Maharaj on horseback was placed on one of the walls.

It was a day packed with varied programmed. Classical music resounded all around the area. The Municipal Commissioner, Shri M.K. Kelkar, garlanded the portrait of Shivaji Maharaj at 9 a.m. The entire town turned out during the day to pay homage to this great king. There was a prayer Pooja (Ritual ceremony) in the afternoon in which many leading personalities of the town participated. This was followed in the evening by songs and the narration of memorable incidents in the life of Shivaji Maharaj (Shiva - Kirtan). In many parts of the town there were Powadas (Songs) sung in praise of this great son of India.

It was a day of rejoicing and celebration, one that this town will always remember !

    With warmest regards,

    Dear Bhanu,

Today is a holiday and well - earned, I must say. We had our School Annual celebrations yesterday and the last ten days were really hectic.

It was one runaround of practices and rehearsals and planning. I was in charge of the Guest Committee and there were invitation to be printed and sent, special chairs to be hired, nameplates to be made and so on. Besides, I was a participant in the Koli dance. Rehearsal days were indeed tiring. Our dance teacher was a perfectionist, and would take practices till late night.

You will be pleased to know I won the 'Best Girl' Award. Mummy and Daddy were so thrilled and proud. The function went off like clockwork. Mr. Tamane, the DSP, was our Chief Guest. He have an enlightening speech and his wife have away the prizes. Then followed the variety entertainment program me. Our Koli dance was well - appreciated . The principal's announcement of a two - day holiday was greeted with loud cheers ! We have two days to relax and let the strain of the last ten days wear off.

    Dear Bhairavi,

The other day our neighborhood underwent a terrible experience. There was a fire in the building two blocks away from our building. It occurred at the dead of the night. I was fast asleep and suddenly found mother urgently asking me to wake up.

Soon I realized that a fire had broken out two building away. From our window we could see tall flames rising in the night sky. Thick smoke billowed out of the windows. The air was thick with smoke and suffocating. A large crowd had gathered, at some safe distance away on the road, and were watching in disbelief as floor after floor was swallowed up by the fire.

The fire brigade had come in and rescue operation were going on. As one person after another was brought out of the building, there were sighs of relief and silent prayers. I could see many of my neighbors involved in rescue work. Even Daddy was out there shouting instructions and keeping the crowds calm.

It took more than two hours for the firefighters to douse the flames completely. Thankfully there were no casualties. However , THE LOSSES INCURRED Due to damage to goods and properties is yet to be calculated.

This is an incident that I shall never forget as long as I live.

    Dear Namita,

I received your letter this afternoon and was quite worried to know that you are  finding it difficult to manage your time. I have always knows you to be a very sensible and responsible person and hence this surprises me.

From your letter, I gather that you have too many activities chalked out for the day. I suggest that you give up one or two which are not connected with your studies; for example, going for chess classes. You have also mentioned that you are taking  both singing and dancing lessons, I suggest that you give up one of them.

Allocate a specific time for your homework. I know that you love reading story books , but keep that for the time just before you go to bed. Cut down on the time that you watch TV . I think you are watching not only your favorite cartoons, but also the TV serials that chachiji loves to watch (that is what she complained about in her letter !).

Remember, studies should be top priority. Everything else can be either done away with or curtailed. knowing what your priorities are is the first step towards effective time management.

    Dear Lester,

I was quite upset to hear of your wild and unruly behavior in and around the premises of your boarding school. My son, this had pained your mother and me a great deal. You see, it was not easy for us to see you going away to a place where we could have very little contact with you. The reason for sending you there was largely your own choice. We, your mother and I, hoped that the boarding school would mold you into a noble human being The reports we have received, however, are to the contrary.

Son, a great writer has said : 'Manners are the ornament of action and there is a way of speaking a kind word, or of doing a kind thing, which generally enhances their value.' You may not full understand the meaning of this quotation now, But what it implies is that a well - mannered person is well - liked by everyone. Remember, if you are good and kind to others, you will give a favorable impression not only of yourself, but of your family as well.

I do not wish to preach, but want you to know that we, your parents, would be very pleased if people spoke well of you. All our love and concern is with you.

Hope you are fine. I am writing to your because I am facing a problem that I cannot speak to Mummy or Daddy about. You are the only person I can turn to for advice. The thing is that my best friends Rohit has joined a gang of boys in our locality who are up to no good. They smoke, and most of the time they tease the girls passing by.

The worst thing is that Rohit has started smoking too and he asks me for money. Much of my pocket money goes on his cigarettes. I cannot refuse him because he begs and pleads. Sometimes he threatens that he will tell Mummy and Daddy that I also smoke. Actually I haven't touched a cigarette so far, and never will. But I don't know what to do. Should I tell his parents ? If I do, his friends will beat me up. How do I stop giving him money ? Because by giving him money , I am only encouraging his habit, which I don't want to do. Also I want him to stop smoking. But he doesn't listen to me.

Please tell me what to do. I am desperate.

    Dear Aniket,

This year we celebrated Diwali with a difference!

It was a clean, green and a socially friendly scene for me and some of my friends, this Diwali.

Nishant, Arun, Divya and some of my other friends had made plans much in advance. Each one of us took our mothers into confidence and when the day arrived , We helped them make puris, Kofta and kheer. We packed these into little tiffin and went to nearby slums and poor localities and gave them to some of the families whom we knew. You can imagine their joy at such a gesture.

We distributed sparklers to all the families in the same locality. We had taken rangoli powder and flower petals and spent the morning designing beautiful rangoli outside their homes. It was fun because all the children in the locality joined in to help.

In the evening, we joined in the programmed of music and dance arranged by our society. The only fireworks lit were sparklers. It was our aim not to add to the noise pollution.

We had also decided to save electrical energy. Hence, instead of decorating our doorways with strings of colored electric bulbs, we lit diyas.

Everyone in our society was unanimous in their appreciation of the way the Diwali celebrations had been planned and executed.

I am sure you had a wonderful Diwali too.

Give my regards to all at home.

    Your loving friend,
    Kumar

Chaudhary, has been in the State hockey team for years. He has been my trainer so far and I have picked up the basics of the game under his guidance. I have also represented m school in many prestigious tournaments and OUR team has won many trophies. I specialize in goal - keeping.

I have heard of your modern and scientific way of coaching and your wonderful ability to take promising students to the national level in the game. I wish to improve my skills because I think I have it in me to excel in the game. Under your coaching I think I shall be able to realize my full potential.

Please let me know if your will consider me as a likely candidate for coaching. I am willing to come and meet you at your convenience.

    Dear Sir,

Miraj is fast turning into a village.. Failure of electricity is the rule rather than the exception in this city. There is no fixed time, nor day, for power outage. How much more can we bear in the name of 'load - shedding'?

The State Electricity Board should tie up with other power plants to provide regular electric supply to this and other towns More importantly, those who are 'robbing' electricity should be identified and strict action should be taken against them.

Apart from the inconvenience, power cuts also result in great economic loss to the city. I hope the authorities concerned will open their eyes to the reality and act sooner than later.

    2. To request you to appoint a full - time librarian.
    3. To conduct a book Donation drive whereby students can collect books for the library.
    4. To request you to allot at least one period per week only for reading.

Ref: News headline, re : Forest area December 26 issue, page 3, column 6.

    Sir,
Yesterday, a whole line of trees long University Road was cut down. This was a totally irresponsible action. Was it really necessary to cut down these trees? They provided shade, beauty, and freshness to the area and promoted health by providing clean air. They also provided a haven for many species of birds and animals. Now the entire area has already become hot, sultry and breezeless.

Where were the organizations like Friends of Trees, who always campaign for the protection of trees, when this heinous deed was being committed ? Did the ones who gave such orders ever stop to think about the health and the cleanliness of the environment ?

This kind of destruction has made many ardent tree - lovers sad. It should not be repeated. I earnestly suggest that the BMC undertake replanting of the trees in the locality as soon as possible.

    Yours truly,
    Maninder S.

Subject : Need for a public park in Panchavati Extension

    Dear Sir,

Our city is fast becoming a concrete jungle. Areas that were once green have started disappearing with astonishing rapidity. We, the citizens of this town, who are suffering due to oppressive urbanization, feel the need for a public park in Panchavati Extension.

An increased population leads to increased use of vehicles. This finally results in high levels of pollution. Hence there is serious need of a park that will offset the menace that we face due to pollution. Parks and gardens are, indeed , the lungs of a locality. It is such places that provide relaxation, clean air and help to reduce stress levels.

We insist that one more public park in modern Nashik is not an idle luxury. On the contrary, it is a vital necessity. Funds must be made available for it. After all, public health is at stake. May I expect early action in his pressing matter?

Subject : Complaint regarding reckless driving by youngsters

    Dear Sir,

I reside at Nanapeth, a locality that has wide roads and broad pavements. Unfortunately, our locality has become a potential danger - zone because of reckless driving by youngsters.

These youth enjoy speeding not only on the road, but also on the pavements. Sometime, three of four of them are seen riding bikes together at full speed, yelling and talking to each other, least bothered about who is on the road. They care little for the young or the old. We have already witnessed seven hit -and-run accidents.

I strongly suggest, on behalf of the residents of this neighborhood, that some strict patrolling be conducted in this area and the offenders be caught and punished. Otherwise there is every chance that our locality will become an accident - prone zone, where ordinary and innocent citizens will have to think twice before stepping out of their houses.

I trust that you will take immediate steps to improve the situation.

    Yours faithfully,
    P. Raman

    Subject: Need For multi-purpose stadium

    Dear Sir / Madam,

I reside in Malad, a suburb of Mumbai. As you know Malad is getting increasingly congested with housing colonies and new buildings coming up every year. A few years ago there were many open grounds where children could play. Now there are many schools as well as several colleges, but not one of them has a playground worth the name. Thus the students in this area are deprived of sports facilities that are so necessary for their physical growth and all-round development. In fact, a multi - purpose stadium in our locality is a necessity, not a luxury.

The stadium should be large and well - equipped, capable enough of being used by all the schools and colleges of our area. It should be suitable for promoting various sports activities among the youth. I do hope you will give this suggestion your immediate and favorable consideration.

    Your faithfully,
    Shreyas Pandit.

    Dear MS Ambekar,

It was the first time that school children had come to help at our Home for the Aged on 5th January, and I am glad to inform you that their visit was a great success.  The children carried out all the tasks we had planned for them.

They did them willingly and obediently. And, of course, our residents enjoyed the story -telling sessions quite as mush as the students did.

In fact, we were wondering whether we could have a few of your students visiting us every month. You can imagine how much our residents enjoyed having young visitors. It brightened up the whole week for them. And I must admit that the 'Helping Hands ' really lightened some of our work.

             With warm regards,

    Yours sincerely,
    Secretary
