This post presents a numbers of activities in a particular sequence which will allow the child to learn language actively and in an enjoyable manner. Some important suggestions have been given for interested parents to help them motivate and guide the children while learning English.

Union is strength.

Once there was a farmer , who had four sons. They always quarreled with  one another. This made the farmer unhappy.

One day, he called all the four sons. He gave them each a stick. He told them, "Try and break the stick."

One by one, they tried. Each one could break his stick easily.

Now the farmer tied up a bundle of sticks together

"Try and break this bundle, " he told them.

Each of the sons tried and tried but the bundle of sticks would not snap.

"Do you understand what this means?" Said the farmer. "If you remain united like this bundle of sticks, no one can harm you."

The King who Wanted to Touch the Moon

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a king called Wanted. He wanted to do everything by himself.

Once, he wanted to find the exact number of leaves on a tree. His minister suggested, "Your Majesty, let us appoint people to do this job."

But King Wanted replied, "No, I have to do it myself !"

So he started counting the leaves. He had his royal breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner under the tree. Even the royal bed was placed under the tree. All the business of the court had to be done under the tree.

"Your Majesty, the people want your permission to build a dam," said the minister.
"Five thousand seven hundred and forty-four," was the only reply.

"Your Majesty, our army needs some more elephants !" said the Commander of the army.

"Thirty-two thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine," was all the answer he got.

This went on for six months. The people did not know what to do. But King Wanted would not stop. Luckily, the season changes and the tree shed all its leaves. So, King Wanted had to stop counting.

Once King Wanted was resting on the terrace. He saw the full moon shining bright in the sky.   "How far is it from here to the moon ?" King Wanted asked his minister. "I have no idea, your Majesty," said the poor minister.
"Find out," said the king. "I want to touch the moon. "The minister was aghast.

"But your Majesty, how will you reach there ?"
"You must start building a tower to take me up to it."                                                                                         The minister called the masons.                                                                 But they told the king that such a tall tower was sure to fall. King Wanted got angry and sent away the masons.
He thought for a day and then he had an idea.

"Build a wooden tower." he ordered. "And use all the wooden boxes in the palace to build it."

But of course there weren't enough boxes in the palace.

"Bring all the boxes you can find in the whole kingdom, " ordered the king.

Thousands of boxes were collected. Many, many boxes were placed one on top of the other. Soon the king couldn't see the top of the tower.

"Now," he thought, "the tower is ready ! I shall go up and touch the moon."

The minister said, "Let us send a guard up first to see how tall the tower is, your Majesty."

"No need," said the king. "I shall go up myself first."

He began to climb up the tower. Higher and higher he went. The people couldn't see him now. But, they soon heard his voice from the sky.

"The moon is still far away. Throw some more boxes to me. " So, they obeyed.

After a while, they heard the voice again, "More boxes ! The moon is still away !" Once again, more boxes were thrown up.

"More boxes, more boxes,"  they heard every little while. Up went the boxes - one, two, three, four ....  "More ! more ! " came the orders from above.                                                                            Swish - Swoosh - Zip - Zang. The boxes went up. And, oh ! What was that ?                                                                                   Suddenly, there was a Bang ! and a Crash ! and a Thud ! and a Rumble and a Tumble ! The tower began to sway and crumble.

Down came the boxes in twos and threes and tens and twenties. People ran for their lives. Soon, there was a mound of tumbled down boxes where there had been a tower. And where was the king ?

Did the king really touch the moon ? No one ever found out. The people never dared to ask. And the king - not a word did he speak about it, ever again !

One night the donkey happened to meet the jackal. The donkey felt very jealous of the jackal and said, "See jackal, even my master is afraid of your voice. Look at me, he always beats me and makes me to carry heavy loads."                                                                                                                                   The cunning jackal wanted to teach a lesson for the jealous donkey. He said, "Who said that your master will not be afraid of you? Have you ever tried howling in the late night?" The donkey thought, "Aha, so, that is the secret."                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The following night, as the farmer was about to sleep, the donkey opened its mouth  Wide open  and started to howl. but, instead of howling,
he could only bray. The farmer heard the loud braying of the donkey. He came out with a heavy stick and gave nice thrashings to the donkey. The poor donkey just then understood not to be jealous of others.                                                                                    Moral: Don't Try To Imitate others out of Jealousy.

The jackal grew fat and healthy from eating all he was left out with. He became greedy and went to the lion and said, "From now on I shall make my own hunt. " The jackal went for hunting. He saw many animals, but was not interested. He waited for some big animal to pass by. A big elephant came that way. The jackal thought, "Aha, now I've got my meal." He leapt to attack the elephant. But, you know what happened; the elephant threw away the jackal with his trunk and gave nice thrashing.

Sleep is necessary

Did You Know ?

Early in the morning, you feel fresh. You are ready to study, play or work.  You study a lot, play a lot, or work a lot during the day. At night, you start feeling sleepy. You close your eyes and go to sleep. After a good sleep, you feel fresh again. This happens every day.

What happens when people don't get enough sleep? They feel tired and sleepy the next day. They cannot pay proper attention to what they are doing.

People need sleep to be in a good mood. When we sleep, our body gets rest. Sleep is also good for our brain. It helps us to remember things better the next day.

Young children need about 10 to 11 hours of sleep. Grown-up people need less sleep. Some people need more sleep than others.

Have you seen animals sleep? How do they sleep?

You may have seen cattle dozing, or cats and dogs sleeping. Animals, too, need sleep. They all have their special ways of taking a nap.

Cats, dogs and foxes curl up to go to sleep. Horses can sleep standing! Birds sleep standing - perched on a branch or bar. Monkeys, too, go to sleep on trees without fear of falling down ! Bats  sleep hanging upside down ! Some water birds can sleep while swimming. Elephants usually sleep standing, but sometimes lie on one side. Luckily, they don't need a bed !

   Rain in the Night

Raining, raining,
All night long;
Sometimes loud, sometimes soft,
Just like a song.

There'll be rivers in the gutters
And lakes along the street.
It will make our lazy kitty
Wash his little dirty feet.

The roses will wear diamonds
Like Kings and queens at court;
But the pansies all get muddy
Because they are so short.

I'll sail my boat tomorrow
In wonderful new places,
But first I'll take my watering-pot
And wash the pansies' Faces.

                                 Aesop's Fables

Fables are short stories that have a moral or message for us- something to learn and keep in mind as we grow up. Most of the fables have animal characters who think and act just like human beings.

It is believed that many of the fables were first told by a wise person called Aesop. Aesop lived hundreds of years ago in a country called Greece. His stories became so popular that people passed them on from generation to generation. Many proverbs and sayings that we use today are based on these fables. Here are two well-known fables.

                                    The Stag at the Pool

One day, a beautiful stag came to a pool of clear water. As he bent down to drink, he saw his own reflection in the water. He was delighted with what he saw. Instead of drinking water, he kept looking at his own reflection.

"How handsome I look !" he said to himself. "How beautiful are these curving antlers! How they add to my beauty ! How graceful they look !"

Then he moved nearer and saw his legs reflected in the pool. He was quite disgusted. "Look at my legs ! Ugh ! They are so ugly ! All spindly with small feet. How I wish that nature had given me legs worthy of my stately antlers !"

As he was brooding in this way, the stag heard an arrow going swish across the pool. At the same time, he picked up the scent of hunters. With a quick turn, he bounded away. His legs carried him swiftly into the forest. The hunters were hot on his trail but they were no match for his speed. Soon the stag left the hunters far behind.

Safe and out of the hunters' reach, the stag slowed down. Suddenly, without realizing it, he walked into a thicket. There were trees with strong branches growing close together. And alas! The same antlers of which he was so proud got caught in the thick growth.

The stag tried to shake himself free, but the more he struggled, the more entangled his antlers got in the branches.

Once again, the stag could hear the hunters drawing close, and grew afraid. At last, with great difficulty, he managed to free his antlers and bounded away.

"I realize now that my ugly feet saved my life. I was so proud of these handsome antlers, but they would have been the cause of my death. Very often, We dislike the very things that are most useful to us."

                       The Dog in the Manger

Once a dog was looking for a nice and comfortable place to lie down. He came to the manger of an ox and jumped onto the hay to rest.

It was a very hot afternoon. After a while, the ox returned from the field. He had worked hard in the hot sun and was now quite hungry. He stood in his stall and was planning  to eat the hay that was put in the manger for him. However, When he reached for the hay, the dog saw him, Standing in the manger he began to bark loudly at the ox. Each time that the ox. came near the hay, the dog snarled, barked and snapped at the ox. He would not allow the ox to eat his hay.

Oxen are generally peace-loving and patient animals. But finally the ox got upset and spoke firmly, "Dog, if you wanted to share my dinner with me, I would not mind it. But you neither eat the hay nor allow me to enjoy it. It is of no use to you. Then why don't you let me have my favorited food ? Don't begrudge others what you don't enjoy yourself."

Recess

Girls and boys
Make lots of noise,
And run and jump and laugh and shout,
While here and there,
With quiet air,
Groups of children walk about.

A game begins,
But no one wins,
Although they play with might and main,
For long before
The game is o'er
The bell rings out for school again.

It's Only a Matter of Practice!

Long, long, ago in faraway China, there lived an archer Called Chen Yaozi. He was a very skilled archer and could perform wonderful feats of archery. He could hit the target precisely at the center even when it was placed at a very long distance. He liked to show off his skill to the admiring crowds that gathered around him.

One day, he was practices his skill in front of many admirers when he noticed an old man standing at the back. The man was carrying gourds of oil that were hanging from a long cane on his Shoulder. All the other people were clapping their hands and praising Chen Yaozi. But this old man was quiet. He neither clapped nor uttered words of praise. He just stood there nodding his head, and said, "It's just a matter of practice !"

Chen Yaozi was annoyed. "Are you an archer yourself ? Do you think anyone can do what I can do with my bow and arrows ?"

"No, Sir," the old man replied. "I am not an archer. And I don't doubt your skill. All I said was - everything's a matter of practice."

Chen Yaozi became very angry. "What do you Know that you pass such thoughtless comments on other people ? Who are you ?"

"Please don't get angry, Sir. I am an oil seller as you must have guessed from the gourds. Every day., I fill these gourds with oil and sell them. Over the years, I have achieved some skill in filling the gourds. If you allow, I'll show it to you."

"Hmmm....., " growled Chen Yaozi. Everybody was curious to see what would happen next.

Patiently, the old man set down an empty gourd on the ground. Then he put a small coin on the mouth of the gourd. In those days, small coins had a little hole at the center. Then the old man stood up, took some oil in his ladle and began to pour oil into the gourd from a height. The oil went straight into the gourd through the hole in the coin. When the old man had finished filling up the gourd, he lifted up the coin. Not a trace of oil could be seen on it.

The people watching it were speechless with wonder.

But the old man only smiled, "As I said, there's nothing special about it. It's only a matter of practice, you see."

Chen Yaozi lost all his anger and annoyance. He just gave a short laugh and said, "You have taught me something important today,"

After that Chen Yaozi never showed off or boasted about his skill as an archer.

The Phantom Tollbooth

Milo was a young boy who lived in San Francisco in the States. He lacked for nothing. Being an only child, at home he was surrounded by all sorts of expensive toys. In school too, there was nothing that he could complain about. But ....! But Milo was bored! Nothing really interested him. He thought of everything as a waste of time, and school as the greatest waste of time of all. Poor Milo!

'There's nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing.' he thought. (You must have guessed by now that Milo belonged to an age when TV, VIDEO GAMES AND COMPUTERS WERE NOT INVENTED!)

But on one long afternoon like any other, Milo suddenly received a huge parcel with a bright blue envelope attached to one side. The envelope was addressed to him, 'FOR MILO, WHO HAS PLENTY OF TIME'! Wouldn't you be surprised if something like this happened to you? So was Milo.

'I DON'T THINK IT'S MY BIRTHDAY,' HE PUZZLED,' AND CHRISTMAS MUST BE MONTHS AWAY, AND i HAVEN'T BEEN OUTSTANDINGLY GOOD, OR EVEN GOOD AT ALL.'  -  MILO WAS AN HONEST BOY, SO HE ADMITTED THE LAST BIT TO HIMSELF.

He couldn't return the parcel; there was no sender's address on it. So, just in order to be polite, Milo decided to open the envelope.

'ONE GENUINE TURNPIKE TOLLBOOTH, IT WAS WRITTEN INSIDE, ' EASILY ASSEMBLED AT HOME, AND FOR USE BY THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER TRAVELLED IN LANDS BEYOND.

Like you, Milo was also intrigued by the words, 'lands beyond'. There was also a list of the contents of the parcel. It contained -

'One (1) genuine turnpike toll-booth : to be erected according to directions.

Three (2)  precautionary signs: to be used in a precautionary fashion.

Assorted coins : for use in paying tolls.

One (1) map : up to date and carefully drawn by master cartographers, depicting natural and man- made features. One (1) book of rules and traffic regulations, which may not be bent or broken.'

And in smaller letters at the bottom, it concluded : 'Results are not guaranteed, but if not perfectly satisfied, your wasted time will be refunded. 'Because Milo had nothing else to do, he followed the 'directions' and erected the tollbooth. It was a proper It was a  proper booth with windows and a roof and a coin box.

'But what's the use?' thought Milo - there was no highway attached to the booth! Nevertheless, Milo set up the precautionary signs, unfolded the map and chose a destination. He chose it at random because he had never heard of any of the places shown on the map, and so one was as good as any other!

Milo was not sure that this new game would turn out o be interesting. However, he sat in his toy car, approached the booth, paid the toll with the coins, and drove past the toll booth. But when he looked back, Oh wonder of wonders, the toll booth had disappeared along with Milo's room and even his house ! He found himself speeding down a highway into an speeding down a highway into an unknown territory!
What happened next is the story of Norman Jester's novel, 'The Phantom Tollbooth'! Though Milo didn't know it then, he had begun his journey in the land of expectations. He was in the kingdom of wisdom. He had many adventures there. He had to rescue the princesses Rhyme and Reason from castles of air. Was he successful in his mission? Who were the strange people and creatures he met there? What happened to the toll booth? Did Milo see it again? Did. Milo find his life interesting later on? You must read the novel to find it out.

The novel 'The Phantom Tollbooth' was written more than 50 years ago but it continues to be a classic of  children's literature. It is a fantasy but it has an important message for children all over the world. It has helped them to look at their school and studies in a new light.

          The Sword in the Stone

( King Arthur famous in legends and history as one of the bravest and noblest kings of Britain, grew up as an orphaned youth, before Destiny intervened, in the form of his protector and guardian, Merlin the Magician, to reveal his true identity to the people of Britain.)

In ancient Britain, at a time when the land was invaded by wild barbarians, the good and noble Lord Uther fought them bravely and drove them away from his land. The people made him king of Britain and gave him the title, Pendragon, meaning Dragon's head, King Uther Pendragon ruled Britain wisely and well; the people were content. But very soon, the king died; it was thought that he had been poisoned by some traitors. There was no heir to the throne of Britain.

The powerful Lords and Knights who had been kept under control by King Uther, now began to demand that one of them should be crowned King of Britain. Rivalry grew amongst the Lords, and the country as a whole began to suffer. Armed robbers roamed the countryside, pillaging farms and fields. People felt unsafe and insecure in their own homes. Fear gripped the country and lawlessness prevailed over the divided kingdom.

Nearly sixteen years had passed since the death of Lord Uther. All the Lords and Knights of Britain had assembled at the Great Church of London for on Christmas morning, just as they were leaving the Church, a strange sight drew their attention. In the churchyard was a large stone, and on it anvil of steel, and in the steel a naked sword was held, and about it was written in letters of gold, 'Whoso pullet out this sword is by right of birth King of England.'

Many of the Knights could not hold themselves back. FANCYING THEMSELVES AS FUTURE KINGS, THEY RUSHED TO THE STONE AND ATTEMPTED TO DRAW THE SWORD FROM ITS STEEL ANVIL. THEY PULLED WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT, BUT NONE OF THEM COULD SO MUCH AS MOVE THE SWORD.

"Obviously, the man who might draw the sword and prove himself to be our righful king, is not amongst us this morning," said the Archbishop. "However, every man who wishes to try his hand at drawing this sword, is free to do so, for the next few days. He who draws the sword will be crowned king. And to celebrate the appearance of this magnificent sword and prepare ourselves for the arrival of our future king, we will hold a magnificent tournament on New Year's Day."
On New Year's Day, a great number of young and brave knights gathered to attend the Church Service. After that, they met in the field nearby, to participate in the Great Tournament. Dukes and Counts, Earls, Barons and Knights crowded on to the field.

Among them was Sir Ector, a noble knight. He was accompanied by his two sons, Sir Kay and young Arthur. Kay was his own son, who had been recently, knighted; Arthur, whom he had brought up as a foster son, was actually an orphan whom he had raised as his own child. The good Sir Ector loved both his sons dearly.

As Sir Kay was preparing to join the tournament, he realized that he had left his sword behind, at home. Hastily he summoned his younger brother and said to him, "Arthur! You want me to win this tournament, don't you? Then you must help me out. Take my horse and gallop home as fast as you can. Get my sword and rush back here at once."

"I'm going," called Arthur, rushing off at once "You shall have your sword sooner than you think!" As he rushed past the church, a glint of steel caught his eye - the blade of a sword, shining brightly in the morning sun. The sword was mounted on an anvil on top of a block of marble, right in the middle of the churchyard. It was the magic sword in the stone; but Arthur knew nothing about it. All he saw was a sword that was available for taking. 'Kay shall have his sword straight away.' Arthur said to himself. He ran up to the stone, seized the sword by the handle and drew it out effortlessly. He rushed back to his brother and handed the sword to him, breathless with excitement.

"You are back very soon, " Sir Kay said to him, "But hey, this is not my sword!"

"No, it isn't," smiled Arthur. "I thought it would take me too long to get home and bring your sword. I found this sword in the Churchyard. It looked good and I thought you could use it just for today. We will, of course, put it back when the Games are over."

Sir Kay stood speechless, staring at his younger brother. He knew all about the magic sword and what it signified; but Arthur was unaware of it all ! Arthur had always been a brave and valiant boy, and he had excelled in fencing and archery, he adored his father and his half brother and his dream was to become the squire to his dashing brother ! And now, without even knowing what it implied, Arthur had drawn the magic sword from the stone! Kay's mind was working rapidly. He actually held the Sword of the Stone in his hand; the very same sword that the strongest and best knights could not so much as grip or get hold of!

Sir Kay seized the sword and ran to their father, leaving a bewildered Arthur behind him. He said to Sir Ector, "Father, Father! This is the Sword of the Stone and  have it in my hand! I am the rightful King of Britain!"

Sir Ector was a wise man. "How did you get hold of his sword, son?" he asked his eldest born . "What does that matter? I have it in my hand. It was meant to be mine. Isn't that enough?" Kay retorted, angrily.

"That's not enough," said the father, quietly. "How did you get hold of this sword?"

"I've got it, and that's what matters, " Kay replied, stubborn as ever.

"Well then, come with me," Sir Ector said, and led his son inside the Great Church which was now empty. Taking the Holy Book from the choir, Sir Ector said to his son, "Swear on the holy book that you drew the sword from the stone."

Sir Kay lowered his eyes. He could not face his father now.

"How did you come by the sword, son?" Sir Ector asked him, once again.

"Arthur brought it to me, father," said Kay, still with his eyes lowered.

"Bring Arthur here, and let the three of us go to the churchyard," Sir Ector told him. "We have to know the truth about this." Soon , the three of them were at the churchyard.
"Put the sword back on its anvil, "Sir Ector said to Kay. But try as he might, Kay could not put the sword back. It struck the anvil and slid off the block.

Arthur saw what was happening, and thought that his father was angry with them because he thought the sword was stolen. Sir Ector had always told his sons, "What matters most for a knight is integrity, being honest and truthful at all times, on all occasions. "

Arthur stepped forward impulsively. "Here, let me put it back," he said, And, taking the mighty sword from his elder brother, he thrust it back on the anvil and it slipped in, neatly. "I assure you father, I did not steal the sword. Kay needed a sword urgently, and I did not want to keep him waiting. Rather than ride all the way home, I DECIDED TO TAKE THE SWORD WHICH I FOUND IN THE CHURCHYRD. AND SEE, IT IS BACK IN ITS PLACE NOW. I FULLY INTENDED TO PUT IT BACK IN PLACE OFTER THE TOURNAMENT. "

And glancing at his brother, he added, "I am sure that is what Kay would have told me to do, wouldn't you, brother?"

Sir Kay did not speak a word.

"Alright Arthur, I believe you," said Sir Ector. "Now let me see you draw that sword out as you did the first time. First, you, Kay."

But try as he might, Kay could not so much as grip the handle. And he could not move the sword however hard he tried.

"Now, it is your turn Arthur," said Sir Ector sternly.

Arthur gripped the handle of the sword and drew the sword out, gently  but firmly.

Sir Ector made him repeat the action again, and again. Each time, Arthur gripped the handle and drew the sword out, without any hesitation.

Sir Ector was overwhelmed. He fell on his knees before his young son who held the might sword in his hand. and bowed his head in deep devotion. Wordlessly, Kay followed his example.

Arthur jumped back in surprise. "Father, why do you kneel before me? Am I not your son?"

"That is what I had thought, until now," Sir Ector replied. "But now, I KNOW BETTER. I know whose son you are. You are the son of the good king Uther Pendragon, and I bow to you, as you are the King of Britain now.

"How could that be? You and I know that I WAS AN ORPHAN BOY ENTRUSTED TO YOUR CARE."

Silently, Sir Ector pointed to the inscription on the stone which Arthur had not seen until now.
'Whoso pullet out this sword is by right of birth king of England.'

"But it can't be me! Father, I am your son, and I shall always remain your son!"

There was a flash of light, and Merlin appeared before them, a hooded figure with bright, shining eyes and a bewitching smile. Lovingly, he laid his honed on Arthur's head and said to him. "Indeed, I was the one who entrusted you to good Sir Ector, for your own safety. Your father and I knew that great danger lay ahead for the kingdom and yourself. No sooner than you were born, your father blessed you and handed you over to me, with the solemn request that you would take your rightful place on the throne of England when it was safe for you to do so."

Turning to Sir Ector, Merlin said, "In the name of the Late King Uther, I thank you. You have done a splendid job of bringing up the heir to the British throne. Now, you must inform the Archbishop and your fellow Knights of all that has happened here. I shall await your return."

Forthwith, Sir Ector called upon the Archbishop and all the Lords assembled at the Tournament. Holding Arthur by the hand, he announced to the assembly, "Behold, the right King of England."

For a moment, there was silence. And then the crowd burst out in angry protests. "How can we believe you?" "Who is this unknown boy?" "Where did he come from?" "How is he any better than one of us?"

The Archbishop took them all to the churchyard. The entire assemblage watched in awe, as Arthur inserted the sword in the anvil and drew it out effortlessly. Some of the Lords and Knights also tried to draw the sword, but failed to do so.

Again, and yet again, Arthur drew the sword from the stone before his people. Each time. cheers went up, and each time, more and more Knights,, drew their swords and held them high, in a gesture of loyalty to their newfound prince. Loud cheers rose from the common people, who had surrounded the churchyard, eager to greet their new king.

Now, Merlin stepped out of the shadows and addressed the crowds, "Behold, O People of Britain, I PRESENT TO YOU, THE ONE AND ONLY SON OF KING UTHER PENDRAGON AND HIS QUEEN. HE IS YOUR RIGHTFUL KING!"

The Care of  Animals and Birds

There are different Kinds of animals and birds in our surroundings.
(1) Animal wealth : We get milk, wool and eggs from some animals. Besides, animals like donkeys, bulls, horses and camels are used as means of transport.

(2) Other Uses : The dogs guard our homes. The cats kill the rats and mice. Some birds eat insects. So we are much relieved from the nuisance of rats and insects.

Suggestions for the care of the animals and birds :

(1)Proper arrangements should be made to keep domestic animals safely. Coops and stables should be provided for them.
(2) Stables and coops should be cleaned regularly.
(3) The domestic animals should be bathed regularly.
(4)Care should be taken during the summer, winter and the monsoon season. They should be protected from heat in summer and covered with sacks, etc. to give them warmth during the winter season.
(5)They should be vaccinated to protect them against various diseases.
(6)They should be given sufficient nourishing food and pure drinking water.
(7)They should be taken out daily in open spaces to move about freely.
(8)Avoid thrashing the domestic animals unnecessarily.

Androcles and the Lion,  The Noble Monkey..,

Androcles and the Lion

Long. long ago, there lived a kind, gentle and courteous man called Androcles. But he had a very cruel master. In those days, Kings, nobles and other wealthy men used poor people as their slaves. Androcles was a slave. The slaves were forced to work for their masters. They had to do what their masters told them. They had no freedom, no rights. Even when they were unhappy with their master, they could not leave him. They were bound by law to obey their master, however wicked he might be.

Androcles did not like his wicked master. His master starved his slaves and often whipped them. Androcles felt that even death was better than serving such a master. He kept looking out for a good opportunity. At the first chance he got, he escaped from the clutches of his cruel master.

Now, although Androcles had thus run away, he was not a coward. He took shelter in a forest. He was not afraid of the wild beasts that roamed the forest. He did not mind that he had no roof over his head. He was happy that he was free as a bird to go wherever he wished.

One day, as he was wandering in the forest, he suddenly came face to face with a lion. His first reaction was to turn and flee. But then he saw that the lion had not moved on seeing him. It neither growled, nor roared. In fact, it looked at him piteously as if it was in great pain.

Androcles paused. Then he moved very cautiously towards the lion, step by step. The lion moaned and whimpered. "Please help me," its eyes seemed to say.

When Androcles drew near, the lion lowered its head and began to lick its paw. Then Androcles saw that the lion's paw was wounded, sore and swollen.

On a closer look, Androcles noticed that a big thorn had pierced one of the lion's toes. 'So this is the cause of the lion's distress,' thought Androcles.

Summoning up all his courage, Androcles stretched his hand slowly towards the injured paw. He was afraid that the lion would attack him if he touched its swollen paw. But the lion seemed to understand his good intention.

Androcles took the paw in his left hand. Deftly, he pulled out the thorn. Then, tearing a piece of his own clothing, the kind man bound up the lion's injured paw. To his surprise and wonder, the lion then licked his arm, as if to show gratitude.

Androcles remained with the lion till it could walk again. He would hunt in the forest and share his food with the helpless beast. Every day, he would clean and dress the lion's wound. Soon, the lion was able to move about. Many times, it followed Androcles wherever he went.

In the meanwhile, Androcles' master had complained to the authorities that his slave Androcles had run away. Soldiers were sent in all directions to capture Androcles. They searched for him high and low but couldn't find him. At last, they came to the forest where Androcles lived.

It so happened that Androcles had gone out alone that day while the lion rested near the cave. Both of them fell into the hands of the soldiers. The soldiers took them back to the city. They put Androcles in chains in a prison. The lion was caged.

In those days, people who were found to be guilty of a serious crime were fed to wild beasts as punishment. Running away from one's master was a very serious crime at that time. Therefore, Androcles, too, was to be thrown to the wild beasts.

On the appointed day, the emperor arrived at the circus and took his place. The crowds cheered loudly. The trumpeters blew the trumpet and Androcles was brought into the arena. His chains were unbound. He felt weak and dismayed. He was certain that this was the last day of his life.

At the opposite end, a gate was raised and a ferocious lion was released into the arena. It had been kept hungry to make it more ferocious. Androcles was filled with fear, but he put up a brave front.

The lion saw Androcles and rushed towards him, bounding and roaring. But suddenly it stopped in its tracks. Then it moved slowly forward. All its rage seemed to have melted. Androcles saw this too. Each friend recognized the other.

To everyone's amazement, the lion bounded towards Androcles again, but when it reached him, it began to purr and rub its nose against him. Androcles hugged the lion. He wept with relief and joy.

The audience, including the emperor, watched this tender sight in great wonder. People began to cheer Androcles and asked for his release. The emperor asked Androcles to explain the lion's strange behaviour. When he heard the whole story, the emperor was also moved by the gratitude and friendship between man and beast. He ordered that Androcles should be set free. He would no longer be a slave.

When the emperor asked Androcles what other reward he would like, Androcles replied that he did not want anything for himself. But he wanted the lion to be set free too.

The two friends went back to the forest to live a free life.

The Noble Monkey

In a forest glade, on the banks of the River Ganga, there was a tall shady mango tree. Every year, it bore big juicy mangoes that were very sweet to taste. In the forest, there lived hundreds of monkeys with their king. The monkey king was bigger, stronger and also wiser than all the other monkeys.

The monkeys loved the mango tree for its spreading branches, cool, shade and delicious fruit. They often played about on the tree and enjoyed eating the tasty mangoes. Their King warned them, "Don't let even a single mango fall into the river. If the current carries it down to the land of men, they will come here  in search of the heavenly fruit and destroy the peace in this land."

One day, however, a ripe mango fell into the river and was carried with the flow to the city of Benares. It was found by a fisherman who had never seen anything like it before. So, he presented it to the King. When the King tasted a slice of the fruit, he liked it very much. He shared it with his queen and ministers. They all loved its flavor and in the end it was decided that a search party should be sent to find the tree that bore such divine fruit.

A fleet of rafts sailed up the river carrying many of the courtiers and the King himself. By and by, the fleet of rafts reached the forest glade on the bank of the river and also found the mango tree laden with fruit. The King and the courtiers were overjoyed.

When the King's men noticed the monkeys enjoying the fruit, they were annoyed. They decided to drive them away mercilessly. They sent volleys of arrows to kill the monkeys and to scare them away for good.

The monkey king swung to the other side of the river and ordered the others to do the same.

"Move quickly! Save your lives by vanishing deep into the forest on the other bank," he urged. However, he soon realized that the river stream was too wide for the others to follow. Quick as lightning, he did something very unusual. Catching hold of a tall cane with his legs, he swung back to the side where the other monkeys waited. Then he took firm hold of a branch of a tree. This way, he made a bridge across the river with his own strong body.

The monkey King then ordered the monkeys to rush to the other side, over his own body, The monkeys lost no time in following his command. The monkey King's body was being trampled upon and bruised and injured by the rushing hordes of monkeys, but he did not waver, He Kept a tight hold over the cane and the branch till the last monkey landed safely on the other side. By then, he was badly injured and had lost all his strength. He fell down in a swoon.

The King of Benares was watching this with amazement. He was touched by the bravery and sacrifice of the great monkey King. He asked his men to stop shooting arrows. The unconscious monkey King was gently lifted from the bank of the river and placed on a couch near the King of Benares.

The King tried his best to revive the great ape. After a while, the monkey King slowly opened his eyes.

"Why did you sacrifice your life in this way?" said the King of Benares.

"The monkeys are like my children. I am their chief and guide and it is my duty to protect them. They are now safe and I die a happy death. I am glad I could do my duty. "  So saying, the great ape closed his eyes forever.

The King of Benares never forgot the great sacrifice that he had witnessed.

On Planting a Tree

"Dear little tree that we plant today,
What will you be when we're old and gray ?"
"The savings bank of the squirrel and mouse,
For robin and wren an apartment house,
The dressing room of the butterfly's ball,
The locust's and Katydid's concert hall,
The schoolboy's ladder in happy May
And the schoolgirl's tent on a holiday,
And mu leaves shall whisper then merrily,
A tale of the children who planted me.

The King of the Golden River

Part I
Long, long ago, in the mountainous part of a country, there was a fertile valley. There were many waterfalls leaping down the mountain tops, but not into the valley. They all ran down the other side of the mountain. One of the falls was very high and shone like gold in the beams of the evening sun. People called it the Golden River.

Now, though there were no streams running down to the valley itself, the wind constantly brought the clouds to the valley. Even when the rest of the country was dry, it always rained in the valley. In the valley, the wind and the clouds made the crops green, the hay high, the apples red, the grapes purple and the honey sweet. People called it the Treasure Valley.

The Treasure Valley belonged to three brothers - Schwartz, Hans and Gluck. The two older brothers were big, ugly and wicked. They were good farmers but they Killed everything that was not profitable for them - even little things like blackbirds and hedgehogs and crickets. They did not treat their servants well and gave them only poor wages. They waited till the corn had become very expensive in the market and then sold it for twice its value. They were very rich but they never ever gave even so much as a penny to the poor. People called them the 'Black Brothers'.

The youngest of the three brothers was only twelve years old. He was just the opposite of his brothers. He was kind to every living thing though his own brothers were cruel to him and made him do all the cooking and the mending and the housework for them.
One evening, the two brothers had gone out. As usual, they had warned Gluck to 'let nobody in and give nothing out'. Gluck was to get their dinner ready for them.

It was raining very hard outside and the weather was very cold. Just then, there was a double Knock on the door. Gluck went to the window and put his head out to see who it was. He saw the most extra-ordinary looking gentleman standing at the door.

The strange visitor was very short, with a large nose, red cheeks, curly moustache and merry, twinkling eyes. He wore a conical cap as high as himself and a cloak four times as long.

"I am wet. Let me in," said the stranger.

"I beg pardon, Sir," said Gluck. "I'm very sorry but I really can't. My brothers would beat me to death if I did any such thing."

But Gluck saw how hard it was raining and how cold it was, and how wet the gentleman looked. So he opened the door and let the stranger in. Gluck thought he would let the stranger get warm inside for some time and ask him to leave before his brothers came home.

The stranger, however, had no plans of leaving. In fact, he told Gluck that he had had nothing to eat for two days and was very hungry. It melted Gluck's heart to hear this. So he decided to give the stranger a part of his own dinner.

Before the stranger had eaten it, however, the wicked brothers returned. They were shocked to see the little gentleman sitting in the house.

At once, the brothers began to shout at Gluck. Schwartz threw a rolling pin at Gluck. At that instant, the stranger put in his conical cap and the rolling pin went spinning to a corner of the room.

The brothers turned to the visitor and ordered him to get out of the house The little man asked them humbly to let him stay as it was so cold and wet outside, but the evil brothers wouldn't listen. They rushed at the old man to throw him out of the house. To their surprise, they found that they couldn't touch him. Instead, they were themselves swept into the corner with the rolling pin.

Then the old gentleman gathered his cloak and cap and said, "At twelve o'clock tonight, I'll call again. But since you have treated me so badly, it will be the last visit I pay you." Then he went away like a whirlwind.

That night, a big storm woke the brothers. It shook the house and blew away the roof. Once again, the wicked brothers saw the strange visitor. He was sitting on a cloud bobbing up and down.

"You may go to your brother's room. I have not damaged it," he told Hans and Schwartz. "Remember , this is my last visit. You will find my card on the table." And with those words, he disappeared.

In the morning, the brothers saw from the window that the storm had swept away whole trees and crops from Treasure Valley. Everywhere, they saw only red sand and grey mud. The valley was a picture of ruin. The brothers then crept into the kitchen. On the kitchen table, there was a small, white card.

                                             ðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘Ž

The King of the Golden River

Part II
South-West Wind was true to his word. He did not return to Treasure Valley after that night. Neither did any other wind. So, there was no rain. Nothing grew in Treasure Valley any more. The brothers made no more profits.

The wicked brothers then began to make money by selling gold. They melted in a furnace, the gold articles they had. They mixed a lot of copper in it and sold the mix as pure gold. Again, they made poor Gluck work in a furnace while they spent the money on themselves.

Soon, all the gold in the house was spent. Only one thing was left - a beautiful golden mug that belonged to Gluck. Gluck's uncle had given it to him when he was a baby. Gluck used to drink both milk and water from it. A Strange, bearded face was delicately carved on the mug. Gluck was very fond of the mug. He did not want to part with it. But his wicked brothers only laughed at him and threw the mug in the furnace. They asked Gluck to pour the gold when the mug was melted and went out on some wicked enterprise.

Sadly, Gluck sat down to watch over the mug being melted. But strangely, after some time, he began to hear a voice singing from the furnace. He lifted the lid of the crucible and what did he see - the face of his old bearded friend, on top of the melted gold !

"Come. Gluck, my boy," said the voice from the crucible. "Pour me out. I am too hot."

Gluck was too astonished. But he took hold of the crucible and tilted it to pour the gold. Instead of gold, a golden dwarf came out of the pot. His was the face carved on Gluck's mug.

"Pray, Sir," Said Gluck, rather hesitatingly, "were you my mug ?"

"I am the King of what you call the Golden River," the golden dwarf told him. He added that another stronger King had turned him into a mug by magic. Gluck had freed him from that enchantment.

The golden dwarf went on to say that he had seen how Kind Gluck was, and how wicked and cruel his brothers were. Then he told Gluck a secret. If anyone poured three drops of holy water into the river, where it started on the mountain top, the river would turn to gold for that person. A person could try this only once. And if anyone put unholy water in the river, he would be turned into a black stone. So saying, the dwarf jumped back into the furnace and disappeared.

When Gluck told this to his brothers, they did not believe him at first, and beat him. But Gluck stuck to his story. So, at last, they believed him and began to fight over who should have the first chance to go to the Golden River. They fought so much that the police came to see what had happened. Hans ran away when the police came, but Schwartz was caught and put in prison.

Hans was happy that Schwartz was in prison. The very next morning, he went to the church, stole some holy water and set off for the mountain.

It was not easy to climb the mountain. He was tired and thirsty. Soon, Hans thought he would drink some of the holy water himself.

Just as Hans raised the flask of water to his lips, he saw a little puppy on a rock. It looked as if it was dying of thirst. Hans only pushed the animal away with his foot, drank some water himself and passed on.

The climb now became more difficult. Hans felt thirsty again. He was going to drink some more of the water when he saw a little child on a rock ahead of him. The child was lying lifeless, its lips parched and burning. Ignoring the child, Hans drank some more water himself and passed on.

The climb had now become very very difficult. Somehow, Hans reached the top of the mountain from where the Golden River sprang. A faint cry fell on his ears. Then he saw a weak old man stretched on a rock. "Water," the man said, "Water ! I am dying!"

"I have no water for you," replied Hans. He jumped over the old man's body and ran to the river. The sun was about to set. The river shone golden in the light of the setting sun. Hans threw the flask of holy water into the river. But alas ! the river did not turn to gold. Instead,  there was only a Black Stone where Hans stood.

When Schwartz returned from prison, he took some of Gluck's money and bought some holy water from a bad priest; and set out for the Golden River.

While climbing the mountain, Schwartz, too, saw the fair child dying of thirst and passed on without giving him water.

As he had climbed a little higher, he saw his own brother Hans stretched on a rock, asking for water. But the wicked Schwartz only laughed aloud and went on without giving him any water. Alas, when he cast the flask into the stream, he, too, was turned to stone.

Gluck waited and waited for his brothers but they did not return. At last, he decided to visit the Golden River himself. He went to a good priest who willingly gave him  some holy water.

Gluck was young and small and he, too found the climb very difficult.

After he had climbed for an hour or so, he became very thirsty. He was about to drink some water , when like his brothers, he saw an old man.

The old man walked towards Gluck, leaning on a staff and asked for some water. Gluck saw that the old man was pale, tired and thirsty. So he gave him the bottle of water. The old man drank up nearly two-thirds of the water. Then he returned the bottle and wished Gluck well.

Gluck did not have any water himself. But as he went on, his path become easier. After climbing for a long time, when he became thirsty, he saw the small child. Gluck was sorry for him and gave him some water. The child began to smile, got up, and ran down the hill.

Now, only a few drops of water were left in the bottle. When Gluck came close to the mountain top, he was very thirsty himself. Just then, he saw the poor little pup that was dying of thirst. "I must help it now, "thought Gluck. "Otherwise it may be too late. "So he poured the remaining drops into the little dog's mouth!

The dog sprang up, and in his place stood the King of the Golden River. He was very pleased with Gluck. The King put in Gluck's bottle, some dewdrops from the petals of a lily. Then he told Gluck to cast it into the leaping river.

Gluck did so, but the river did not turn to gold. However, it changed its course and began to flow through the Treasure Valley, making it rich and fertile once again. Gluck lived in the valley, helping the poor and the needy. His barns were always full of corn and he never lacked for money.

Ryokan and the Starfish

Ryokan was a monk who
lived in Japan. He was a well-
Known teacher and a poet and a calligrapher.

One day. he was walking on the
beach and he saw that hundreds of
starfish had been washed ashore in a
storm. The storm had blown over and
the starfish were dying in the hot sun.
Ryokan began to pick up the starfish one
by one. He threw them back in the sea.

"What's the use?" said his disciple who
was watching Ryokan. "There are hundreds
of fish dying. Throwing back a few of them
will not make any difference."

Ryokan picked up another fish.

"It will make a difference to this little fish,"
Said Ryokan, throwing the fish back into the sea.

[Honesty is the Best Policy]

Honesty is the Best Policy :

Honesty is a great virtue. An honest man is of high character. Honesty always pays in life. It may not be rewarding immediately, but it helps us in the long run. people rely on an honest man. They look at him with respect and honest. An honest man is self respecting. He is a man of high moral sense. He is fearless and courageous. He does not bow his head before others. He can face any situation in life with courage and confidence. Thus honesty is the best policy.

We live in the world of  competitions. There is a rat race for more and more wealth and power. It is an age of cut-throat competitions. people forget honesty. They want to be rich overnight. So they become dishonest. Businessmen feel that they cannot make money if they are honest. Our social system is based on the power of money. So everybody is mad for money. An honest man often suffers. At times he has no money to maintain himself and his family. His sons and daughters may not get good education and medical treatment for lack of money. Money plays an important part in our society. A dishonest man lives more comfortably then an honest man. Thus faith in honesty is shaken. Even an honest man begins to think whether honesty is the best policy.

Let us examine the whole thing critically. A dishonest man thinks that he will become rich by dishonest means. But this is not right. An honest man may be in trouble for want of money. But he will be happy in the end. Money or wealth got through dishonest means does not last long. We earn it today and lose it tomorrow. A dishonest man is always in fear, immoral and corrupt. He has no internal happiness. An honest man may be poor, but he is fearless, happy and contented. He is respected by all. But a dishonest man is hated in society.

A dishonest man may have some advantages for the time being. But he soon realizes his mistakes. A dishonest man is a curse to Society. He ruins the whole system of society. Such a person should be punished. Even God is unhappy with him. So We Should always believe in the saying, " Honesty is the best policy". A great English poet has rightly said, "An honest man is  the best creation of God".

Service to man is service to Go                    People visit places of worship and perform religious ceremonies to please and serve God. These very same people are quite often indifferent to the human suffering around them. How can we serve God without loving and caring for His creations?

Coleridge writes in his Rime of the Ancient Mariner : 'He pray best, who love best / All things both great and small;/ for the dear God who love us,/ He made us all.' The poem ' About Ben Ad ' illustrates the same truth. Ben Ad asks the recording angel to write his name ' as one that loves his fellow men' . And his name comes first among those who love the Lord.

We Pray to God to show mercy to us and help us in life's grim struggles and misfortunes. How can we expect God to answer our prayers when He sees that we are blind to the sufferings of the hungry, the ailing and the handicapped? One good turn is worth a hundred prayers. father Damien became a leper in the service of lepers.

He spent his entire life looking after a colony of lepers. Ultimately, he died of leprosy. What a shining example of heroic self-sacrifice! That is the way to gain God's grace.

American humorist Josh Billings has rightly said : "There is not much fun in medicine; but there is a heck of a lot of medicine in fun. " Yes , there is a lot of medicine in laughter and it certainly is the best medicine.

Medical experts say that many of our diseases are caused by stress, Worries and tensions. So, if we change our attitude to life in general and be hopeful and cheerful and have optimism and faith, we shall surely be able to laugh away many of our physical ailments. Laughter also helps us in stressful times.

Science has proved that laughter or, in other words, a cheerful and positive disposition, improves digestion, regular hormone secretion in the body, and thus equips us with the power to resist diseases. Medical experts say that laughter chases the toxins out of our system and makes us feel greatly refreshed, physically and mentally. No wonder it has been said that a hundred laughs a day are equal to a ten minute jog!

Make Hay While the Sun Shines

Hay is mowed and dried grass. The drying can take place only in sunny weather. Therefore, hay must be made while the Sun Shines. The implication of this apparently simple advice is that we must seize the opportunity before us and take maximum advantage of it.

A Chance lost may never come again. We must avail ourselves of fa circumstances and use them to our advantage. Youth is the time to take risks, Work hard, make all-round progress and lay by enough for a contented and comfortable old age. " Strike While the iron is hot" is another saying expressing the same idea. Opportunities will not present themselves again and again. The readiness to seize one When it offers itself is the key to success. So, We must make hay While the sun shines.

A Stitch in time Saves nine

A Small tear in your shirt or dress can be mended by a few stitches. But if you neglect it and delay the repair, the tear will grow larger and then will require many more stitches. Or the tear might even be beyond repair and you may just have to throw away the shirt or dress altogether. This is the literal meaning of this proverb.

The underlying meaning however, is that our neglect of a minor initial defect would cost us a lot of trouble later on. A Small crack in a dam, if not repaired in time, may lead to a large breach and flood the area around. A small crack in a piece of furniture or a ship may result in a major mishap.

Any trouble seems harmless in the beginning. Then it grows and finally we have to pay a heavy price in terms of time, energy, money and suffering. Hence it is necessary to nip the trouble in the bud. The proverb advises us to deal promptly with disease or trouble right at the start, lest they get out of hand. Timely action saves a lot of unnecessary trouble later on. A stitch in time always saves nine.

Time and Tide Wait For No Man

A Person Who is lazy imagines that he or she has all the time in the World. The tardy person thinks that time is his slave and he or she can do things Whenever he or She Pleases. However, this is not So. There is a saying that time and tide wait for no man. Tides have their fixed timings and do not wait for anybody. Similarly time waits for no man. The clock keeps on ticking. If we do not use every minute to do something worthwhile, we are simply wasting our lives.

They say, " Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today." So let us respect time and do things When they are supposed to be done. Let us not put off for tomorrow what we can do today. There is a time for everything. Work While you Work; Play while you play; Study while you study. Let us not idle away the hours in useless pastimes such as Watching TV for hours, gossiping with friends or just lazing around the house doing nothing. It is only the person Who uses every minute wisely who is sure to be successful and prosperous in life.

Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

People generally feel very depressed and unhappy When they face difficulties or find themselves in unpleasant situations. However, every such difficulty has its own positive side. A butterfly struggles desperately to come out of its cocoon, and may even wonder at the cruelty of nature; but this struggle makes its wings strong and helps it to fly easily later on. Similarly, every dark cloud has a silver lining, that is, every difficulty has its own positive outcome.

Manu, a five-year-old orphan living in an orphanage, was devastated When the tsunami wiped out the only home he knew : the orphanage. It seemed to be the end of the world for him. However, through some social workers he met a couple who had lost their only child in the tsunami. The couple saw Manu , loved him instantly, and took him into their home and heart. Manu got a lovely home and loving parents. The tsunami, Which had been a dreadful cloud for him, also had a silver lining.

Therefore, one Should always go through life believing that Whenever bad things happen, there are also some good outcomes.

                  The Liar (Value : Honesty)

Rohan is a nice boy. But he has one fault. He often tells lies. One day, he forgets to do his homework. The teacher asks him, "Rohan, why have you not done your homework today ?"

Rohan replies, "I was sick yesterday, teacher."

The teacher believes him and does not punish him. She forgives him. In the evening, She meets Rohan's mother in the market. She finds out that Rohan had lied to her. He had not been sick at all.

The next day, he again comes to school without doing his homework. Once again, he lies to his teacher. This time also, the teacher does not punish him.

Later, She finds out that he had lied to her a second time. She is very, very angry. The third time, Rohan tells the teacher the truth. He had really been sick.

But this time, the teacher does not believe him. She punishes him. Rohan cries a lot, but it is of no use. The teacher does not forgive him.

 Do You tell lies ?

                                           ðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘ŽðŸ‘Ž

As You Sow, So Shall you Reap

The man is responsible for the effect of his actions. If the action is based on goodness, it will churn out only goodness in the long run. If the action has been evil, the outcome also tends to be evil. Goodness is the child of  good deeds and misfortune and calamities are the children of evil. According to the natural laws every action has equal and opposite reaction. If we plant a sapling of rose we shall have roses. But if we plant cactus we shall have the thorny cactus. It is equally true in the life of an individual or a nation.

We will be rewarded or punished according to the good or bad deeds that we do. Sowing and reaping, are part and parcel of the law of nature. If we sow good seeds in our lives, we will get good results. However, the reverse will happen if we decide to take the wrong way. To study or work honestly and diligently is one way to sow good seeds in order to get good results. we are the only one in this world; responsible for the effects of our action. Our present work always makes or helps us to make our future.

If a student studies hard in his early life, he builds a good career for himself in his youth. Those who neglect studies are not able to make good career.

It is universal truth that we get from  life what we sow in it. Actually life is like a big field and all of us are farmers in it. Our future is the direct Outcome of what and how we sow the seeds of character, right attitude, perseverance, utilization of time and opportunities given to us, and finally how industrious and sincere we had been in carrying out our responsibilities. This famous maxim proves the same in Our life.

A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed

It is a famous proverb which tells us the importance of true friend. In actual sense the friend who helps us in our need of hour is a real friend. There are number of friends around us, but only few of them help us when we are in problem or in difficulty. Some may linger around us till our pocket is full of money. They leave us when we have nothing to give. prosperity is not touchstone of friendship. Adversity tells a man his true friends.

Friendship has been very challenging for prophets and saints. Jesus had a large number of followers, his ready friends. Still none dare come to save him from being crucified. None could face the onslaught of the opponents. We know the story of two friends who were passing through a forest. When a bear was seen approaching them the stronger and more active of the two deserted his companion and scrambled up a tree. The other man lay down as if dead. The bear sniffed him all over, then went away taking him to be dead. The false friend came down and asked what the bear had said in his ear. The angry man got up and told him that the bear had told him not to trust selfish and insincere companions. This is what we often experience in our lives. When we are in dire need of our friend's help we find that he has vanished.

It is said that prosperity gains friends, adversity tries them. True friends do not desert us when we are in difficulties. They stand by us in sun and shower and do whatever they can to help us. There is the selfish and self- sacrificing friendship. How many of us are prepared to make sacrifices for our friends? hardly any, ' Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone 'says a wise man. We realize the truth of this saying when we are in trouble. But since, we do not like false, fair-weather  friends, we should, on our part, the to be honest and faithful to our friends. we should always be friends in someone else's need and, thus friends indeed.

My Happiest Day   ( Happy  Birthday )

   My Happiest Day

It Was Tuesday, the 20th March, 2019. It was my birthday and also was the ' Sparrows Day'. I had recently read an article about the ' disappearing sparrows' in Mumbai. I felt very Sorry about their miserable condition. From that day I was thinking of doing something for the poor sparrows. Then I Decided to celebrate my birthday differently.

I had collected the material I required for making the sparrows happy. I started to set up an open bird-cote near the Window of my house. I made a box of light wooden planks. Then I nailed two steel bowls of water on both sides of the cote. I put some grains and seeds on the cote. I filled the bowls with water. I also put some sparrow food inside the box. The box was big enough for the sparrows to move in and out.

Then I waited for the sparrows to come. In the beginning they did come near the cote but did not enter in the cote. They were afraid. But Soon, After Some hesitation, they began to alight on the cote one after another. They ate grains and drank water. They chirped and twittered. The whole atmosphere was filled with joy at the sight of the twittering tiny sparrows. My parents and neigh bourse were  very happy and thanked me for the gift I gave them on my birthday. The Sparrows were assured that they were safe and no harm was done to them.

It was the biggest and the happiest day of my life. Everyone Spoke high of me and praised me for my kind act. My joy knew no bounds. I was feeling Proud that I could do Something nice for the Sparrows in my Own small Way.

                                            Space Travel - My Wish

According to the novelist H.G. Wells, one of the things to come in future was space travel. It was a fantastic dream then. It has turned into reality now. The invention of rockets, satellites and spaceships (spacecraft) have opened the gates of space travels.

Since I read about the accomplishments of the astronauts of different countries, I had my secret wish of Space travelling. I don't know When and how it will realize but  I do wish to travel to space. How shall I enjoy the travel to space!

First I wish to go into orbit round the earth. Then I shall emerge from the capsule and, still tied to my space vehicle, I shall walk in space. I shall move about in space with the help of space-gun. Then I Wish to land on different planets. My first visit will be the moon, of course. Then waiting and taking rest on a space station built by scientists and engineers, I shall travel to nearby planets. I shall travel by shuttle rocket service between the earth and the space station and from the space station to any other planet of my wish. I Shall enjoy different Weather, land , food, and aliens if at all they exist there. What a marvelous  travel it will be!

My Grandfather  (  Place ,Person, Situation,)

                            My Grandfather

The Person who taught me how important life really is, is none other than my grandfather. He is about 72 Years Old. He is a religious man. He wears very simple dress. He has silvery hair and is very particular about his eating and living habits. His name is Yashwant.

He is very loving and affectionate. He has a big heart. So he always helps the poor and needy. His gentle eyes and loving hands are always around me. He takes care of my needs. He never looks to his own comforts. He is always ready to sacrifice for the whole family. He is a good advice in difficulties. We rush him to seek his advice and help. Even our neighbors are all praise for him.

My grandfather always guides me about what is good and What is bad, how to behave in the society, how to respect and love elders. He tells me everything in a friendly manner. He corrects me if I commit mistake. He is my philosopher in my hour of need. He is a wealth of knowledge. So whenever I have any question, any doubt he satisfies me with a good explanation. He tells me very nice and meaningful stories which give me the lessons of life. We have really a good bonding. I always go for an evening walk with him. He teaches me to speak Sanskrit a English. He is the pillar of our family. He tries to keep the family together with love and affection. So everyone respects him. So I love and like my grandpa very much. I always pray to God to give him happy, Healthy and long life.

Health is Wealth

There is nothing in our life that is more valuable than good health. Without health there is no happiness. no peace and no success. A person with ill health cannot enjoy the pleasure of being wealthy. This proverb causes us to reflect on whether money or good health are more valuable. Health is as valuable as wealth, if not more. we value our health. we can work harder and be more productive when we are health. if we are not healthy, we cannot enjoy our material wealth.

A healthy sportsman can move towards a gold medal in the Olympic. A healthy businessman sees his business flourish. A healthy student has a sway over his friends and tops in the skill he likes. Man is a rational animal. In fact, man has been able to control nature due to his highly developed brain. It is all true. But for the development of the intellect. It is necessary that the body too, should be healthy. A sound mind in a sound body is an oft quoted saying. The mind can never be healthy if the body is sick.

The Government has been spending lakhs of rupees for providing medical facilities. It is busy in fighting various diseases to make society free from diseases. But medical facilities can never solve the problem. So our people need physical exercise to develop their vitality and vigor, and to live disease-free life. It is the only way to maintain health, mental, emotional and physical development of the people. It our health is good we can do anything in our life .we can achieve success. So be healthy and always keep in mind our true values should relate to human-well-being and not just to the accumulation of wealth. So it is rightly said ' Health is Wealth'.

Be Healthy (Value : Scientific Outlook)

Three children from Std. II have fallen ill. They have not appeared for their exams.

"Children, you should all be very careful about your health," Says the teacher. "Teacher, what must we do to remain healthy?" asks Nisha. "I Know, teacher, I know," says John. "We must not eat uncovered food, especially from the roadside hawkers."

"We must eat lots of fruits and vegetables," says Nita. "We must always keep ourselves clean," says Ismail. "We must wash our hands before and after eating," says Nisha. "We must play outdoor games every day," Says Suman. "Yes," says the teacher. "Your body needs good food and exercise. You must eat well and play every day."

"Is there anything else that we can do, teacher?" asks John.
"Yes, you must always be cheerful and happy," says the teacher smiling. "Will you promise to do all these things?"

"Yes, teacher," says the whole class.
   Do you eat healthy food?
Do you keep yourself clean and tidy
Do you play outdoor games?

Poem:

Oranges and lemons
Are good for your tummy,
Bananas and apples
Are so yummy.
Cherries red,
And chikoos sweet.
Grapes in a bunch
Are good to eat.

How to Achieve Great Success                             Edison, the great scientist, said that success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. How true it is ! Without hard work, toil, perseverance, there can be no achievement. Take the life of any great person and you will see the truth of it. Success does not come by neglecting our duties or Shirking our responsibilities or lazing away all the time. Great heights can only be achieved by constant climbing. Sherpa Tenzin and Edmund Hillary did not fly to the top of Mount Everest. They climbed. It took them days and they had to face many difficulties.

Without regular and hard study no student of the SSC can hope to do well, even the most brilliant. Constant study, revision, practice - all these are necessary. Then only can one hope for the room on the top. It can never be that a student who doesn't study at all achieves a distinction in the Board examinations.
So let us then be up and doing. Let us face the Challenges of life boldly; let us be Successful!

The Need to acquire a scientific attitude

I am extremely happy to be here to speak to you on a topic that is of deep personal interest to me - the need for all Indians to acquire a scientific attitude.

I always noticed that more than hard work and persistent effort, the majority of us resort to magic and superstition to get our work done. We approach our tasks in the most unscientific way. If our businesses fail, we blame it on the gods. if we do not win, we put it down to luck. We forget the importance of perseverance and persistence, and in many ways neglect to do our duty. All this is because we do not have a Scientific attitude. ours is a country where people pray for timely rain or break a coconut before a rocket launch.

To nurture a scientific attitude, we must have faith only in our right efforts. we must strive to do our best in whatever field we work. we must involve ourselves in proper action and inspired thinking. we must strive for more Knowledge in our field. We must do all this, instead of expecting godmen to perform miracles. Moreover, we should do away with all our superstitions.

I do hope that the examples  I have given have made it clear What a scientific attitude is and why it Should be developed. I hope that what I have said will help you When you make decisions in your day-to-day life.

                     Solid Waste and Health

                                 Dengue - A deadly disease

Dengue is a non-contagious disease caused by an infection through mosquito bite. The disease spreads mostly in warm and wet areas usually in the rains. Fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, vomiting and a rash are its symptoms. Sometimes patient  Starts bleeding through nose, gums, when he / she gets high Fever. These patients can recover in 2 weeks by proper treatment. such patient should drink lots of  fluids, take sound rest and non-aspirin medicine and Hospitalized if fever is high. take certain precautions while travelling in dengue-prone countries.

Proper collection and destruction of solid waste is very important for the overall  health of urban citizens. Indian Cities generate about 80,000 tons of solid waste everyday. It is very hard that none of the cities in the country collects and destroys its waste in safe way. About 60% of India's solid waste consist of biodegradable organic Wastes. It originates from kitchens and markets. By using earthworms this solid waste can be turned into rich organic manure. This is an eco-friendly way of making manure .

Earthworms play a key role in soil biology by serving as a natural agent. They convert organic wastes into valuable organic manure. Earthworms improve the soil texture and soil aeration .They enrich  the soil with nutrients. They promote useful soil required for plant growth.

                             A School Teacher's Thoughts

Oh dear, a traffic jam ! Will I reach late ? Children will wonder why I haven't turned up. I wish I could have started a little earlier today. But how? It's difficult with all the house work, cleaning, cooking, getting my children and their tiffin's ready for school. But still, I see to it that I'm never late to school.

I Wonder if students Know that teachers have 'homework' too. Correcting their notebooks, test papers, planning how to make their lessons interesting and happy. It's not easy to Keep so many children busy in their work. They seem so restless.

In class, half my time is spent in solving their little problems, quarrels. And complaints ! They're endless.

Now, don't think I'm complaining. Not at all. I love all the children in my class. I think of them all the time. How eager they are to show me what they do. How happy they look when I praise their work. They depend on me so much ! That is why, even when I'm not well, I don't feel like missing school.

I love being a school teacher. Where else could I be like a 'Mom' to so many loving kids for a few hours every day ?

The Titibha Birds

Titbha birds are very beautiful sea loving. They love sea food. Usually, they live in small mounds of sand that are close to the sea shore.

Once, a pair of Titibha birds was in search of a safe place to dig their nest. The female birds was ready to lay eggs. "Dear husband, I am to lay eggs soon. We have to find a safe place for the eggs to hatch, "She said.

The male bird replied, "What about this place? The sand here is soft and wet. The climate is good. Our babies will find it a fun to live here."

The female bird looked around and said, "Everything is fine dear, but, the sea is too close. If a huge wave comes, this place will be washed off."

The male Titibha said to his wife,  "Look at my power dear." Saying this, he trotted toward the sea.

As the sea was receding after a wave, it went away from the Titibha bird. The foolish bird mistook that to be a sign of fear. He said, "See dear, the sea is so afraid of me that it dare touches my feet. If this is the state of the sea, how will it harm our eggs?"

The female Titibha was eluded by her husband's explanation. She accepted to lay eggs there itself. In a few days she had laid all her eggs. They were all safely hidden in the pits they had dug. The female Titibha said, "Dear husband, although I have laid our eggs, I am still afraid of the closeness of the place to the sea." The male bird proudly replied, "Don't worry dear, the sea dare not touch our eggs." The birds flew into the sea in search of food.

There was a fast wind and the sea rose high. The waves dashed deep into the shore and swept away everything near the shore including the Titibha eggs. When the Titibha birds returned, they were shocked and saddened at the loss of their eggs.
