                              Our Teeth

Did you Know ?

New born babies do not have teeth. The first tooth appears when a baby is about seven months old. By the time a child is 3 years old, all of the baby teeth appear. Little children have twenty baby teeth. Some time between five to seven years, baby teeth start falling off. But there's no reason to worry. Another set of teeth is ready to take the place of the baby teeth or 'milk teeth'.

In fact, it's the new teeth that push the milk teeth out of their place.

This new set of teeth lasts long. These teeth are known as permanent teeth. When these teeth fall off, there are no other teeth to take their place.

People have thirty-two permanent teeth. Most of them appear by the time a person is ten years old. Only the last tooth on each side of the jaws appears later. Sometimes, these teeth appear quite late - even after a person is forty or fifty ! They are known as 'wisdom teeth !'

You know that our teeth help us to bite, chew and eat our food. They also help us to speak properly. A person who does not have teeth is not able to speak properly.

Animal babies also have milk teeth that fall off. Then they get a new set of teeth. Some animals are lucky. They get several sets of new teeth one after the other.  But remember that when we lose a permanent tooth, we won't get another one. So, it's best to take good care of our teeth.

Care of our teeth

  • We must brush our teeth and clean our mouth properly twice a day.
  • Every time we eat something, we must rinse our mouth properly.
  • We must take care of our teeth.
  • We must brush our teeth in the morning and at night.
  • Then germs will not stay near the teeth.
  • We must not eat too many chocolates and ice creams. They are bad for the teeth.
  • We should not eat or drink things that are too cold or too hot. They are also bad for teeth.

Pearly Teeth, Healthy Body
Grandfather's new teeth !

We had all gathered to play in the evening. Subhash had not come. He'd gone with his Grandpa to the dentist. Three months ago, Grandpa's teeth had all been removed. He was to get his dentures today.

Monikatai told us, 'Such dentures look like real. but the teeth are actually false.'
Ahmed who is in the first standard promptly asked, 'why get false teeth? My brother's teeth also fell, but they all grew again. Won't Subhash's Grandpa get new ones like him?'
      That made everyone laugh.

Monikatai explained to Ahmed, The teeth that we get when we are babies are called milk teeth. They start falling when we are seven or eight years old. After that, we get new teeth once again. These are called permanent teeth. When these teeth fall, we don't get any new ones.'

Balu wondered, 'So what if we don't get new teeth again? Why should we get false ones?'
Monikatai said, 'Balu, you're in the third standard, aren't you? Several of your classmates must have lost their teeth. You have also lost some. Don't you have trouble eating and talking?'

Then Balu remembered, 'Oh yes! You're right! I love guavas. But now I can't eat them.'
Mary teased him' And, you know, Balu can't say 'she' either! His front teeth are missing. When he tries, it sounds like a whistle!'

    Everyone laughed again.

'Now you know why it is so important to look after permanent teeth,' Said Monikatai wisely.

Just then Subhash and his Grandpa returned. Grandpa smiled at us. His new dentures were shining bright !

Can you tell?

  • Many people lose their teeth when they grow old. But some people lose their permanent teeth quite early. What could be the reasons for that?

Taking care of our teeth

After eating something, we should wash our mouth, scrub our teeth inside and outside, with a finger. We should swill plenty of water in our mouth and rinse it well four or five times.

If we do not that, particles of food remain in the mouth. They stick to our teeth and tongue. They get stuck in between the teeth. If they remain there, the teeth begin to rot. Then we get bad breath, that is, the mouth smells bad. If this happens often, the gums are also affected. They may ooze blood and pus. These foul substances go into our stomach. Then, we can fall ill.

Because of the rotting particles in the mouth, our teeth decay. Slowly the teeth become lose and in the end, they fall.

We must avoid this. For that, we must brush our teeth in the morning and before going to bed at night. We must also clean our gums and tongue.

Neem or babul sticks are sometimes used for cleaning teeth. Some people buy tooth powder from the market or make it at home. Many people use a toothbrush and toothpaste.
Neem and babul sticks or homemade tooth powders do not clean well from the gaps between our teeth. Also, tooth powder can be rough, while the neem or babul sticks are hard. They can injure our gums.

Using a brush and toothpaste, we can clean the gaps between the teeth properly. Besides, the foam of the toothpaste helps the particles stuck between teeth to come loose and get washed away.

How to be nominated as a World Heritage Site

There are five steps for nominating the World Heritage site. The first of which is for a country or state party to take an inventory of its significant cultural and natural sites. Then the site is included in a tentative list after an inventory in the country or the state. After it, the name of the site is included in the nomination file from the tentative list.

The review of the file is taken by the advisory bodies. Once the review is taken, the World Heritage Committee gives the decision. And then the name of the site is inscribed on the World Heritage list after meeting the criteria. Thus, it goes through rigorous procedure.

                                      Heritage Of The World!

Heritage is our legacy from the past, What we live with today and what we pass on to future generation. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration we Should protect them as they are our valuable treasures. We Should preserve it for our next generation to make them understand how glorious our past was if we want to keep them safe. Sometimes  an monitored visitors pose a threat to such sites, especially in developing countries Where sites lack the infrastructure to support the number of tourists. Tourists Should be encouraged to visit during off season and ensure they must not trespass areas marked as banned, not physically damage any monument, must leave the site clean and tidy. Security measures may be tightened. Lack of management, financial resources can also cause threat to the structure. So as a part of Security measures the local administrators must update the physical boundaries of the site clear. The local administrators must generally be proactive to ensure the preservation of World Heritage Sites.

What Is chocolate?

Chocolate is prepared from the fruit of the Theobroma cacao, a tropical tree whose name means "Food of the gods" in Greek, according to "Chocolate: Food of the Gods, " an online exhibit by the Cornell University Library.

Theobroma cacao trees are native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in South America. The trees are widely distributed from southeastern Mexico to the Amazon River. They thrive in hot, humid areas within about 20 degrees of the equator, according to Cornell. As the popularity of chocolate spread, growers establishes plantation in other regions, such as West Africa and South and Southeast Asia Today, Ghana, Cote doloire, Nigeria, Indonesia and Brazil account for 79 percent of the world's cacao production.

Cacao trees bear fruit that are about the same size and shape of a papaya, according to Patrice Chocolate. These bumpy, lumpy berries, or pods, are full of up to 50 sour seeds, or beans, covered in white pulp.

Do you know where chocolate comes from ?

Chocolates  don't grow on trees but they are made from seeds or beans  that grow on cacao trees Cacao trees grow in hot regions. They bear flowers The flowers grow into big pods these pods have a tough casing. Inside each pod, there are many seeds or  beans.

When the pods are ripe, the beans are removed from the pods. The beans are bitter to taste So, to remove the bitterness, the beans are soaked and fermented for a few days. Then they are dried in the sun The dried beans are cleaned and sorted . Then they are roasted well. The roasted beans are crushed.

We get three things from the crushed beans - a bitter liquid yellow cocoa butter , and cocoa powder The powder is used in cookies and cakes and of course for making chocolates. Chocolates are made with cocoa powder milk and sugar

The chocolates that you get in shops are made in big chocolate factories. Wouldn't it be fun to visit a chocolate factory?

You can also make a chocolate drink at home. Just put some cocoa powder and sugar in a cup of warm milk and stir!

Next time you bite into a chocolate , think of the tree that bore the pods which had the beans that gave the cocoa powder !

..................................................

Chocolate is a preparation of roasted and ground cacao seeds that is made in the from of a liquids, paste, or in a block, which may also be used as a flavoring ingredient in other foods. The earliest signs of use are associated with Olmec sites [within what would become Mexico' post-colonial territory] suggesting consumption of chocolate beverages, dating from the 19th century BC The majority of Mesoamerican people made chocolate beverages, including the Maya and Aztecs. The English word "Chocolate" comes, via Spanish , from the Classical Nahuatl word xocoatl.
The seeds of the cacao tree have an intense bitter taste and must be fermented to develop the flavor. After fermentation, the beans are dried, cleaned, and roasted. The shell is removed to produce cacao nibs, which are then ground to cocoa mass, unadulterated chocolate in rough form. Once the cocoa mass is liquefied by heating, it is called chocolate liquor. The liquor may also be cooled and processed into its two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Baking chocolate, also called bitter chocolate,  contains cocoa solids and cocoa butter in varying proportion, without any added sugar. Powdered baking cocoa, which contains more fiber than cocoa butter, can be processed with alkali to produce ditch cocoa. Much of the chocolate consumed today is in the form of sweet chocolate a combination of cocoa solids, cocoa butter or added vegetable oils, and sugar. Milk chocolate is sweet chocolate that additionally contains milk powder or condensed milk. White chocolate contains cocoa butter, sugar and , milk , but no cocoa solids.

Chocolate is one of the most popular food types and flavors in the world, and many foodstuffs involving chocolate exist, particularly desserts, including cakes, pudding, mousse, chocolate brownies, and chocolate chip cookies. Many candies are filled with or coated with sweetened chocolate. Chocolate bars, either made of solid chocolate or other ingredients coated in chocolate, are eaten as snacks. Gifts of chocolate molded into different shapes[such as eggs, hearts, coins] are traditional on certain Western holidays, including Christmas, Easter. Valentine's Day, and Hanukkah. Chocolate is also used in cold and hot beverages, such as chocolate milk and hot chocolate, and in some alcoholic drinks, such as cream de cacao.

Although cocoa originated in the Americas, West African Countries, particularly Core d' lvoire and Ghana, are the leading producers of cocoa in the 21st century, accounting for some 60% of the world cocoa supply.

With some two million children involved in the farming of cocoa in West Africa, child slavery and trafficking were major concerns in 2018, and continue to be. International attempts to improve condition for children were doomed to failure because of persistent poverty, absence of schools, increasing world cocoa demand, more intensive farming of cocoa, and continued exploitation of child labor.

There are three main types of chocolate: White chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. White chocolate tastes much sweeter than the other two types, because it has more of the sweeter ingredients in it.

Milk chocolate is sweet, but not as sweet as white chocolate. Milk chocolate has some cocoa.

Dark chocolate is the least sweet and has the strongest chocolate flavor.

  • Ruby chocolate is a type of chocolate created by Barry Callebaut. The variety was in development from 2004, and was released to the public in 2017. The chocolate type is made from the Ruby cocoa bean, resulting in a distinct red color and a different flavor, described as "sweet yet sour".
  • Raw chocolate is chocolate that has not been processed, heated, or mixed with other ingredients. It is sold in chocolate-growing countries and to a much lesser extent in other countries, often promoted as healthy. Pieces of dark compound chocolate cake coating.
  • Compound chocolate is the name for a confection combining cocoa with other vegetable fat, usually tropical fats or hydrogenated fats, as a replacement for cocoa butter. It is often used for candy bar coatings. In many countries it may not legally be called " chocolate".
  • Modeling chocolate is a chocolate paste made by melting chocolate and combining it with corn syrup, glucose syrup, or golden syrup. It is primarily used by cakemakers and patisseries to add decoration to cakes and pastries.
  • Cocoa Powder is the pulverized cocoa solids left after extracting almost all the cocoa butter. It is used to add chocolate flavor in baking, and for making chocolate drinks. There are two types of unsweetened cocoa powder: natural cocoa produced by the Broma process with no additives, and Dutch process cocoa,
  • Which is additionally Processed with alkali to neutralize its natural acidity. Natural cocoa is light in color and somewhat acidic, and is commonly used in recipes that also use baking soda; as baking soda is an alkali, combining it with natural cocoa creates a leavening action that allows the batter to rise during baking. Dutch cocoa is slightly milder in taste, with a darker color. It is frequently used for chocolate drinks such as hot chocolate due to its ease in blending with liquids. However, Dutch processing destroys most of the flavonoids present in cocoa.
The cacao tree was first found to be useful for its seeds about two thousand years ago. Early Central America and Mexicans used the seeds from the cacao tree to make a drink that tasted bitter, not sweet. Only the important people could drink it. The word for "Chocolate" in almost every language comes from its name in the Nahuatl language of Mexico, chocolati .
Later on, this drink was made sweeter and made into what is known today as hot chocolate. It was made popular by Spanish explorers who brought it from North America to Spain. When chocolate was sweetened and made into candy, it became a very popular treat for many Europeans. At first, only the rich could afford chocolate. Now, many people enjoy it. Most cocoa today is made in Africa.

Chocolate is made from the kernels of fermented and roasted cocoa beans. The kernels are ground to form a pasty fluid chocolate liquor, Which may be hardened in molds to form bitter (baking) chocolate, pressed to reduce the cocoa butter content and then pulverized to make cocoa powder, or mixed with sugar and additional cocoa butter to make sweet (eating) chocolate. The addition of dried or concentrated milk to sweet chocolate produces milk chocolate.

White chocolate, prized for its rich texture and delicate flavor, is technically not a chocolate. White chocolate is made from cocoa butter with added milk products, Sugar and flavoring such as vanilla.

                                All about Glass

Glass is one of the most beautiful substances that we see around us. Just take a look around Yourself and see how many things you can find that are made of glass - light bulbs, bottles, jars, glasses, reading glasses, marbles, windowpanes - to name just a few. Where does this glass come from ?

How glass is made

The glass that is used to make so many everyday things is a man-made material. Can you guess what it is made from? It may seem unbelievable, but this clear, transparent and smooth looking material is actually made from sand !

Glass is made by heating a mixture of clean white sand and chemicals like soda and lime. The mixture is heated in a furnace till it turns into, hot, liquid glass. When it cools down, it becomes stiff and hard.

How glass is shaped

Once glass has become cold, stiff and hard, it is not possible to shape it. Glass is brittle. That means it breaks easily. It has to be shaped into different articles when it is still hot and soft.

Very hot glass is more like a liquid - you can pour it, mold it, roll it, press it or even blow it to make a variety of shapes.

Hot liquid glass is poured into molds and hardened to make articles of various shapes and sizes. It can also be rolled out to make flat sheets of glass. In another process, molten glass is floated on a bed of molten metal to make very flat glass sheets of even thickness. Gobs of hot liquid glass can be blown into bottles, bulbs, glasses and other objects. Liquid glass can also be drawn out into very thin fires or glass wool.

Some properties of glass

Glass has many useful properties. It is transparent - you can see through it. It is strong and hard. You can put a lot of load on it. It is impermeable - it does not allow water or other liquids to pass through and it doesn't get soggy or stained itself. Glass has no effect on the food, water or other substances stored in glass containers. In other words, it doesn't impart a smell, or taste to them. Ordinary glass has a smooth surface and it can be washed easily. And last but not the least important is the fact that it looks beautiful. No wonder then, that it is used to make so many things.

Coloured Glass

Ordinary glass is colour less but it is possible to produce coloured and transparent glass by using different combinations of chemicals in the glass making process. Glass can be given many beautiful colours - blue. violet, turquoise, ruby red, pink, amber, orange, deep yellow, purple, amethyst, dark green, even black and white !

Stained Glass

Coloured glass is used to make beautiful pictures, especially in windowpanes. Such windows are known as 'Stained glass windows'. They are seen mostly in churches. Coloured glass can also be used to make beautiful sculptures or decorative articles. It is also possible to paint on glass using special chemicals and processes.

Glass can be recycled !

Another unique feature of glass is that it is 100% recyclable. Old glass can be used to make new glass any number of times. Recycling glass in this manner is much cheaper than making new glass from raw materials. It requires much less heat, and a lot of energy is saved. If you recycle even a single glass bottle, you save enough energy to power a color TV for about 20 minutes. So, the next time you throw away a glass bottle, think ! Glass is valuable.
